Strong Defense Pushes Mustangs to 60-41 Win at Alvernia

Box Score

READING, Pa. - Eleven different Mustangs scored as the Stevenson women's basketball team defeated Alvernia, 60-41, on Saturday at Jack McCloskey Court to extend its win streak to three games.

The Mustangs (9-6, 5-2 MAC Commonwealth) started off strong as they jumped out to an 11-4 lead with three different scorers in the book.  The run was capped by a three pointer from freshman Hannah Crist, but the Crusaders matched her three on the next play.  Stevenson allowed only two free throws as they totaled 10 points to end the quarter, including a layup from senior Kameron Ward with three seconds on the clock.  The guests held onto a 21-9 lead at the end of the first.

Alvernia (1-15, 1-6 MAC Commonwealth) gained momentum after Liv Andrefski hit her second three pointer of the game to cut the score to 23-14 just under two minutes into the second period.  The Crusaders scored five straight points as they chipped away at Stevenson's lead and made it a 24-19 game with 5:18 remaining in the half.  The Mustangs regained momentum on jumper from senior Sara Tarbert, as they held Alvernia to only two points and finished the half on a 9-2 run.  Stevenson led 33-21 at the break.

In the first half, Stevenson shot 43.8 percent from the floor while holding Alvernia to just 25.9 percent.  The Mustangs also held a 21-18 advantage on the boards and 15-6 advantage in points off of turnovers.

Stevenson scored only one bucket from the field in the third period as Alvernia slowly worked its way back into the game.  The Mustangs stayed agressive as they were able to hit five from the free throw line, but the Crusaders cut their deficit to 37-30 with just over three minutes to play in the quarter.  Sophomore Jonyae Curry hit Stevenson's lone jumper with 35 seconds on the clock, but Adrefski matched it at the buzzer.

The Mustangs maintained control through the final period as they forced 11 turnovers and held the hosts to just nine points.  The quarter was highlighted by a bucket from freshman Savana Herndon and a three pointer from her sister, sophomore Montana Chance Herndon.  Stevenson scored 20 points off of 60 percent shooting in the final frame.

Tarbert recorded her 15th straight double-double to open the season as she totaled 21 points, 13 rebounds and three steals.  Curry and junior Kaitlyn VanTash each added nine points, while VanTash grabbed six rebounds.

Stevenson finished shooting 41.4 percent from the floor, holding the hosts to 32.7 percent as it improved to 8-1 when holding an opponent under 40% shooting.  The Mustangs held onto their advantage in rebounds as they led 39-34.  They also totaled 27 points off of turnovers compared to just 12 points for the Crusaders.

The 41 points allowed by the Mustangs were the fewest since allowing 41 in a 47-41 win over Salisbury in November, 2015.

Stevenson returns to action on Monday, January 16th when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan for a non-conference matchup beginning at 6 p.m.
