Mirza Scores Twice, Mustangs Fall on the Road at Neumann

Box Score

ASTON, Pa. - The Stevenson men's soccer team held a 25-15 advantage in shots, but Neumann put seven of its 15 shots on goal as the Knights posted a 5-2 non-conference victory over the Mustangs Wednesday afternoon.

For the third time this season, the Mustangs (0-5-1) have scored the opening goal before losing the lead. It was also the first loss versus Neumann in the nine-game series. The two teams finished in a scoreless tie a season ago.

Sophomore Iliyas Mirza scored both of Stevenson's goal, with both coming on penalty kicks. Mirza, who leads the team with four goals, is a perfect 3-for-3 on penalty kicks. Three of his four goals have coming in the opening half.

Mirza put the visitors ahead with his first made penalty kick in the sixth minute after three consecutive fouls by Neumann, including one in the box.

The Knights (1-4), who had been held scoreless in their opening four games, scored their first in the 32nd minute as Christian Cortese knotted the game for the hosts. Tyler Williams gave the hosts a 2-1 advantage just 4:59 later before Nick Testa added another to give Neumann a 3-1 halftime lead.

Neumann wasted no time in the second half as Jake McDevitt scored twice in a 2:32 span, including one in the opening 34 seconds of play to push the Knights lead to 5-1.

Mirza's second made penalty kick came in the 85th minute. Stevenson is 8-for-10 on penalty kicks dating back to the start of the 2014 season.

The Knights' Shane Smith finished with nine saves in net.

Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, September 17 when the Mustangs host a non-conference contest versus Bridgewater (Va.) beginning at 5:00 p.m.
