Women's Volleyball Holds Back Bobcats in Season Opener

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Junior Annika Schwartz totaled 10 kills as the Stevenson University women's volleyball team opened the 2016 season with a 3-0 win over Frostburg State University Thursday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.  The set scores were 25-17, 25-21, 25-22.

Stevenson (1-0) got eight kills from sophomore Moriah Savage, while senior Kristen Brooks tallied six kills and a team-high 14 digs.  Junior Megan Hren added nine digs, while senior Sara Bollinger handed out 18 assists.

Frostburg State (0-1) was paced by Naya Cheatem's 13 kills.  Lindsey Scepura finished with 17 digs, while Madalyn Torres handed out 23 assists.

In the third set, Stevenson was forced to rally from a 21-17 deficit.  A Schwartz kill in between Bobcat ball handling errors pulled the Mustangs within 21-20 before a kill by Ashante Corey-Bey gave the guests a two-point advantage.  Following a Frostburg service error, a Hren service ace tied the set 22-22, and the Mustangs took the lead on a block by senior Jackie Zeppa and freshman Victoria Prokic.  Kills by Schwartz and freshman Emily Castro closed out the match.

Stevenson appeared in control of the second set, opening leads of 18-9 and 20-12 before three straight Cheatem kills and a Frostburg ace pulled the Bobcats back in it.  The guests pulled within two three times, the last at 23-21, before an attack error and a Hren ace closed out the frame.

The hosts used a 7-2 run midway through the opening set to open up a 19-12 lead following a kill by Bollinger.  A Schwartz kill closed out an opening set 25-17 win for Stevenson.

Frostburg State hit .204 compared to Stevenson's .161, but had nine service errors and a pair of aces to Stevenson's 11 aces and six service errors.  The Mustangs hit .275 in the opening frame but were limited to .031 hitting in the second stanza.

Stevenson returns to action Friday when it travels to Christopher Newport for a tournament.  The Mustangs face UMass Boston at 6:00 and the host No. 11 Captains at 8:00.
