Walter's Career-High Four Goals Lifts Mustangs to Fourth Straight Win

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's lacrosse senior Shelby Walter scored a career-high four goals while classmate Carli Bafford and junior Olivia Monteiro combined for nine goals as the Mustangs posted a 19-13 MAC Commonwealth victory over Albright Saturday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.

The Mustangs (6-7, 4-0 MAC Commonwealth) extended their win streak to four while improving to 24-1 in the month of April dating back to the 2013 season. The lone loss game against defending conference champion Messiah in 2014.

Monteiro scored an unassisted tally just 14 seconds into the contest after controlling the opening draw control. The Lions (8-5, 3-2 MAC Commonwealth) tied the game at 1-1, but the Mustangs scored five straight, including two by Bafford to build a 6-1 lead.

Mariah Cullen stopped the run with her 34th goal of the season but Stevenson answered with four in-a-row, including two on the free-position by Walter and junior Tori Bruno. Bruno finished the game with two goals, both on free-position shots.

Albright scored two of the final three goals of the opening half, both by Danielle Carey, to close the gap to 11-4 at the break.

The Mustangs started the second half right where they left off, scoring the first three goals of the period, including back-to-back goals by Walter and Bruno just 40 seconds a part.

Trailing 18-9, the Lions scored four straight, including three by Amanda Smith, to get within five but with just 1:33 remaining. Smith finished with a team-high four goals.

Monteiro totaled five goals on the day while Bafford finished with four. Junior Brady Heher added three goals while junior Rachael Akshar scored her first of the season. Heher also added five draw controls.

Senior Maggie Lawder totaled a career-high 15 saves, including eight in the second half.

Stevenson travels to 19th-ranked Messiah for a rematch of last year's MAC Commonwealth title game on Wednesday, April 20. Opening draw is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. The Falcons edged the Mustangs in both meetings last season, including 11-6 in the championship game.
