Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Junior Sara Tarbert recorded her 12th double-double of the season, but it was not enough as the Mustangs dropped a non-conference contest to Elizabethtown on Monday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
Stevenson (12-7) totaled 24 turnovers in the game, compared to 20 for Elizabethtown (13-6). This is the first time since January 4th that the Mustangs have totaled at least 20 turnovers.
Senior Stephanie Martinez hit a three-pointer from the left side just 30 seconds into the game to get the Mustangs rolling. Stevenson would go on to hit two of their next three shots to take a 7-2 lead 2:34 into the game. Elizabethtown responded with two free throws and a layup to cut their deficit to one, but a three pointer from senior Caitlin Roy extended the hosts lead to four.
After 2:12 of scoreless action, Rachel Forjan hit a three pointer and Emily Martin connected on two free throws to give the Blue Jays their first lead of the game with just over two minutes to play in the first quarter.
Leading by one, Elizabethtown opened up the second quarter with a 7-2 run to extend their lead to six, but junior Kameron Ward took two charges, swinging the momentum back to Stevenson. The Mustangs forced two turnovers as they finished the half on a 12-4 run, giving them a 26-24 lead at halftime. The run was highlighted by four points apiece from Tarbert and Ward.
Stevenson finished the first half shooting 32.1 percent from the floor, while holding Elizabethtown to 28.6 percent.
The guests tied the game for the fourth time just 23 seconds into the second half after an Alysaa Aichele steal led to a layup by Martin. Both teams battled back and forth as the third period saw three lead changes, with neither team leading by more than four points. The Mustangs committed 10 turnovers in the period as they entered the final quarter down 38-34.
A pair of free throws from Tarbert and the second three pointer by Roy put Stevenson ahead by one with just under a minute into the fourth. After trading the lead, the two teams were tied once again with 3:47 to play. The Blue Jays scored five-straight points, but a three pointer by Martinez cut the hosts' deficit back to two with 1:11 to play.
After a free throw by Elizabethtown, Stevenson had possession with 38 seconds to play, down one point, but a Martinez three-pointer was off the mark.
The Mustangs were forced to foul as Elizabethtown extended their lead with free throws, and gave Stevenson their first loss in nine games.
Tarbert finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Martinez added 10 points and four assists. Roy chipped in eight points.
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, February 10 when it hosts MAC Commonwealth opponent Lebanon Valley beginning at 6:00 p.m.
