Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md.- Junior Sara Tarbert recorded her fourth 30-point performance of the season as the Stevenson women's basketball team picked up its eight straight victory with a 72-63 win over Widener in their breast cancer awareness game on Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
In their last four meetings, Stevenson (12-6, 9-3 MAC Commonwealth) is 3-1 versus Widener (12-10, 5-8 MAC Commonwealth). The Mustangs are also 6-1 at home this season and 19-1 dating back to February 2014.
Senior Stephanie Martinez found Tarbert on the right side for a three-pointer to open up Stevenson's scoring almost three minutes into regulation. Down one with 5:35 left in the period, senior Caitlin Roy hit a deep two from the corner to take their first lead of the game, and one that they would not relinquish. After the Mustangs extended their lead to five points, Widener cut the deficit to just one with 3:14 to play. That was close as they would get in the first as Stevenson was able to maintain a four point lead through the end of the period.
The Mustangs went on a 7-0 run to start the second period, hightlighted by a three pointer from Martinez, and layups from Tarbert and sophomore Imani Sanders. Widener called a timeout, but Stevenson took advantage as they tacked on 10 more points, including eight from sophomore Kaitlyn VanTash.
The guests made their first shot after 4:15 of scoreless minutes on a three pointer from Allison Gallegher, but a fast break layup from freshman Jonyae Curry pushed Stevenson's lead back to 20 points, 32-12. The teams traded baskets, as the Mustangs held a 38-20 advantage entering the half.
In the first half, Stevenson shot 51.5 percent from the floor, holding Widener to just 19.2 percent. The Mustangs totaled 24 points in the paint, comapred to six for the Pride.
The Pride chipped away at the Mustang lead, getting as close as 12 points, 48-36, with 3:27 left to play in the third period after back-to-back layups from Sarah Engman and Brianna Wylie, but a layup from Tarbert and free throws from Curry and classmate Armani Duckett-Mooney maintained Stevenson's lead through the end of the period. Tarbert totaled 10 points in the period.
Widener cut their deficit to just six points twice in the final period, the last on an Allison Gallagher three-point play with 1:33 left that made it 65-59, but the Mustangs held on.
Tarbert recorded her 11th double double of the season as she totaled 30 points, 17 rebounds, and four assists. VanTash added 14 points and six rebounds, while Martinez finished with nine points and seven assists.
In pregame ceremonies, the Mustangs honored Curry's grandmother, Joyce Curry, who lost her battle with breast cancer earlier this year.
Stevenson returns to action on Monday when they host former MAC Commonwealth opponent Elizabethtown beginning at 7 p.m.
