Box Score 2 ELMIRA, N.Y. - Stevenson men's volleyball freshman Landon Shorts totaled 34 kills but the seventh-ranked Mustangs dropped back-to-back five setters versus No. 11 Elmira and Rivier Saturday afternoon at Speidel Gymnasium on the campus of Elmira.
The Mustangs (13-5) have dropped three of their last four matches after winning 11 in-a-row with a 19-25, 24-26, 25-22, 25-18, 12-15 loss to the host Soaring Eagles and a 25-21, 23-25, 19-25, 25-15, 13-15 loss to the Raiders.
Shorts totaled a team-high 17 kills in the opener while senior Patrick Schuyler totaled nine. Schuyler also finished with a match-high 13 digs while adding three block assists. Meanwhile, senior Rob Wingert totaled 40 assists, 12 total blocks, including 10 block assists, four kills and two digs.
Senior Kyle Pottieger and junior Nate Ellis chipped in with six kills a piece and combined for 16 block assists.
Erik Griffin led the Soaring Eagles (15-4) with a match-high 24 kills and added 10 digs and two service aces.
Versus the Raiders (11-6), Shorts and Schuyler each recorded a match-best 17 kills while Schuyler added nine digs. Ellis totaled eight kills while Pottieger chipped in with seven.
Wingert totaled 48 assists, five digs and five block assists.
For just the sixth time this season, the Mustangs hit under .300 as they recorded a .221 hitting percentage against Elmira. The team rebounded with a .342 hitting percentage but Rivier totaled 21 more digs.
Stevenson returns to action on Friday, March 4 when the Mustangs host a Continental Volleyball Conference contest verus Juniata beginning at 7:00 p.m.
