Women's Basketball Outduels Dutchmen 61-58

ANNVILLE, Pa. - The Stevenson women's basketball team fought back from a pair of 10-point deficits to defeat MAC Commonwealth opponent Lebanon Valley, 61-58, on Wednesday at Sorrentino Gymnasium.

With the game tied 58-58, senior Caitlin Roy hit the game-winning three-pointer with 2:12 left in the game to put the Mustangs (5-6, 2-3 MAC Commonwealth) ahead at the final buzzer.

The fourth quarter featured four ties and three lead changes, with the last tie coming with 3:03 left in the game after a Sara Tarbert layup and a jumper from Lexie Lantz of Lebanon Valley (9-4, 3-2 MAC Commonwealth).  Neither team could snatch the lead until Tarbert found Roy who hit the game-winning three-pointer with 2:12 to play.  With 11.5 seconds left in the game, the Dutchmen had a shot at overtime following a Stevenson turnover, but Stevenson's defense forced a tough three-point attempt at the buzzer and the Mustangs took the win.

After the Mustangs connected on two of their first three shots of the game, Lebanon Valley jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first 5:18 of play.  

With 3:09 left in the period, junior Niavanni Grant stole a defensive rebound from the Dutchmen and hit classmate Tarbert who finished the layup and halted the Dutchmen run.  On the Mustangs next trip down the floor, Tarbert hit another shot in the paint and cut the deficit, 14-8.

A jumper from Lebanon Valley's Taylor Troutman was the last bucket in the first as it pushed the Dutchmen lead to 16-8.

In the first quarter, the hosts shot 46.7% from the field, while holding Stevenson to just 28.6%.

Just 11 seconds into the second quarter, sophomore Kaitlyn VanTash drew a foul and hit two free throws to bring the Mustangs within six, 16-10.  Four-straight points from the Dutchmen extended their lead to 10 points with 7:57 left in the half.

Over the next 3:10 of play, Stevenson's transition game was strong as the team scored 13 straight points and took a 25-22 lead.  The run was highlighted by three forced turnovers for the Mustangs as well as five points from VanTash and four from freshman Jonyae Curry.

Stevenson held the Dutchmen scoreless for 4:26 before Taylor Umbrell finished a layup and brought the score to within one, 25-24.  Both teams exchanged baskets the rest of the way as the halftime score favored the guests, 29-28.

At the half, Stevenson's field goal percentage jumped to 46.2%, while Lebanon Valley's dropped to 36.7%.

The Mustangs pushed their lead to six points three times in the first 6:59 of the third quarter, before the Dutchmen totaled eight free throws on a 12-3 run to take a 47-44 lead entering the final period.

Tarbert totaled 12 points in the final quarter and 28 in the game on 12-19 shooting, while grabbing 13 rebounds en route to her fifth double-double in six games and seventh of the season.  Roy scored 12 points, while VanTash added seven and Curry totaled six.

Stevenson finished the game shooting 45.3%, holding the Dutchmen to 31.7%.  The Mustangs also edged Lebanon Valley in points off of turnovers, 12-9, while the Dutchmen held a slight 37-36 rebound edge.

The Mustangs return to action on Saturday when they host MAC Commonwealth opponent Arcadia beginning at 3 p.m.
