Box Score GLENSIDE, Pa. - Freshman Jonyae Curry totaled a career-high 10 points as the Stevenson women's basketball team defeated Arcadia, 67-50 on Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.
The win was the sixth straight for Stevenson (10-6, 7-3 MAC Commonwealth) and sixth consecutive win over Arcadia (7-11, 2-7 MAC Commonwealth). The victory also keeps the Mustangs in a three-way tie with Lycoming and Messiah for second place in the league standings.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 15-2 lead sparked by a three pointer from senior Stephanie Martinez on her first shot of the game. Stevenson's defense dominated throughtout the opening quarter as they forced seven turnovers and held the hosts to 15.4% shooting. The Mustangs totaled a 33.3% shooting percentage, while Martinez added seven points.
Both teams battled in the second as the Mustangs only held a one-point scoring advantage in the quarter. With 5:46 left in the half, Valerie Dimurno hit two free throws to bring the Knights as close as eight, but Stevenson rallied in the final minutes to push their lead to 12 points, 28-16. The run was highlighted by a steal and two free throws from freshman Armani Duckett-Mooney as well as four points from junior Sara Tarbert.
In the first half, Stevenson totaled 12 points off of 10 turnovers while the Knights picked up four points off of seven. Tarbert totaled 11 points.
After both teams swapped baskets to start the second half, Martinez hit her second three pointer to spark yet another Mustang run. Over the next 4:38 of play, Curry totaled six points, giving Stevenson a 41-24 lead with 3:10 to play in the quarter.
In the final period of play, sophomore Sara Downing and freshman Montana Chance Herndon each hit free throws to record their first collegiate points. Stevenson led by as many as 22 points, en route to their sixth straight win.
The Mustangs shot 40.4% from the floor, holding Arcadia to just 30.9%.
Eleven different players scored for Stevenson in the game. Curry went 2-6 from the floor and 6-6 from the foul line while adding six rebounds. Tarbert and Martinez joined Curry in double figures, finishing with 15 and 10 points, respectively.
Stevenson returns to action on Monday when they host MAC Commonwealth opponent Lycoming beginning at 5:00 p.m.
