Box Score READING, Pa.- Four different players totaled double-digit scoring performances as the Stevenson women's basketball team dominated in a 73-58 victory over MAC Commonwealth opponent Alvernia, at the Physical Education Center on Saturday. The win marks the third straight for the Mustangs.
Stevenson (7-6, 4-3 MAC Commonwealth), which led 37-25 at halftime, hit its first five shots of the third period, as it pushed the lead to 19 points, 47-28, off of a layup by junior Sara Tarbert with 7:12 left in the quarter. The Crusaders slowly chipped away at the lead getting as close as 11 points, 55-44, but the Mustangs defense prevented any extensive runs. Stevenson entered the final period with a 57-45 lead.
In the first 1:02 of the fourth quarter, Alvernia (7-9, 2-5 MAC Commonwealth) cut the deficit to just nine points, but that was as close as they would get as the Mustangs were able to push their lead to 17 three times over the final frame to secure the win.
The Mustangs, who trailed just once, jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead in first period as the team forced four turnovers in the first 2:31 of play. With 6:09 to play in the quarter, Alvernia's Tyra Roberts made her second layup to cut the deficit, 8-4.
Stevenson held Alvernia scoreless for the next 5:40 of play, as the Mustangs went on a 11-0 run to push their lead to 13 points, 17-4. The run featured points from three different players, including five points from freshman Jonyae Curry.
With just under 30 seconds left in the period, Alvernia's Stevie Fortna drove and made the layup, trimming the hosts' deficit, 17-6.
In the first quarter Stevenson forced eight turnovers, including two 10-second violations and a shot clock violation.
After a layup by senior Caitlin Roy opened the second period, Alvernia went on a 6-2 run, cutting the deficit to nine points, 21-12. The Mustangs responded with a 7-0 run of their own, highlighted by a three-pointer from senior Stephanie Martinez and a steal and layup from freshman Armani Duckett-Mooney.
Stevenson took its largest lead of the half, 35-19, with just over a minute to play when junior Kameron Ward drove, drew a foul, and hit both free throws. After an Alvernia three-pointer, Ward drove again, but this time dished the ball to Roy who finished the layup, 37-22. Another three-pointer at the buzzer by Alvernia gave Stevenson a 37-25 lead entering the locker room.
Stevenson totaled 31 points off of 22 turnovers in the game, while shooting 11-15 from the line. The Mustangs shot 48.4% for the game while limiting Alvernia to 40.4% shooting, and the guests held a 39-34 rebounding advantage.
Ward went 3-4 from the floor and 8-9 from the line as she totaled a career-high 14 points and six rebounds in the game. Roy matched her season high in the scoring column with 14 points, while adding eight rebounds and four assists. Joining them in double figures, Tarbert totaled 12 points, nine rebounds, and three assists while sophomore Kaitlyn VanTash added 10 points.
The Mustangs return to action on Wednesday when they host MAC Commonwealth opponent, Hood, beginning at 6 p.m.
