Mustangs Post First Shutout of Season in Scoreless Draw Versus Neumann

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - For the second time in the last three home games, the Stevenson men's soccer team went to overtime but neither team found the back of the net as the Mustangs finished with a scoreless draw versus Neumann Wednesday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.

The Mustangs (3-3-1) posted their first shutout in seven games this season and first since a scoreless double overtime tie versus than No. 1 Messiah on Oct. 14, 2014. It was also the 10th shutout at home since the start of the 2013 season.

The Knights had their best opportunity in the 70th minute when Tben Donnie fed a pass across the box to Joe Martinho who was wide open on the back post. But Martinho's one-timer was a little too strong as it sailed over the cross bar.

Senior Ryan Callinan totaled two saves before he left the game with an injury in the 51st minute. Junior Michael Tringali replaced Callinan and was tested early on as he knocked away Neumann's next shot.

With just over 10 minutes remaining, freshman Carmen Caltabiano fired a shot from eight yards out that found the feet of senior Calvin Granger. But the back heel flick by Granger was grabbed by Shane Smith.

Thiago Cruz nearly gave the Knights the win with two seconds remaining off the long throw in from Abu Donzo but Tringali came up with his second save of the game to force overtime.

Tringali totaled three saves in the first overtime period as Neumann outshot Stevenson, 3-0. Neither team managed a shot in the final 10 minutes. Tringali totaled five saves in the game while Smith recorded three.

The Knight outshot the Mustangs, 16-9, including 7-3 in the first half. Neumann also held a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Stevenson continues its three-game home stand on Saturday, September 19 when the Mustangs host a non-conference contest versus Randolph-Macon. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
