Strong Second Half Leads Mustangs Past Lebanon Valley, Clinch Playoff Berth

ANNVILLE, Pa. - Sophomore Olivia Monteiro scored a career-high four goals as the Stevenson women's lacrosse team scored four-straight goals to open the second half en route to a 14-10 Commonwealth Conference victory over Lebanon Valley Saturday afternoon at Arnold Field.

With the win, the Mustangs (9-6, 5-1 MAC) clinched a spot in the conference playoff and are one win shy of clinching the No. 2 seed. The team, who won its first conference championship a season ago, have appeared in back-to-back conference championship games.

The Dutchmen scored four of the games first five games, including two by Anna Pagels, the final coming with 13:40 to play giving the hosts a 4-1 lead. During the stretch, Stevenson committed six turnovers and were outshot 7-3.

Freshman Hollie Larrimore and senior Taylor Wright scored just 52 seconds apart to spark a 3-1 run for Stevenson to end the half. It was the first goal of the season for Wright and first since the 2012-13 season.

Six different Mustangs totaled a point in the first 3:39 of the second half as Stevenson scored four-straight to take an 8-5 lead, one it would not relinquish. After the third goal of the game by Pagel, the Mustangs scored four of the next five to take their largest lead of the game, 12-7.

Lebanon Valley answered with three-straight goals over a 3:50 period to cut its deficit to two with 4:45 to play. But the Dutchmen were only manage to total two shots the rest of the way as Stevenson scored twice more to end the game.

The Mustangs outshot Lebanon Valley, 34-20, including 24-8 in the second half while holding a 15-11 edge in draw controls. Stevenson was also 5-for-11 on free-position attempts and has totaled at least five free-position goals in the last four games.

Monteiro finished with a career-best five points while adding a game-high five draw controls. Senior Kathryn Merrick, who totaled a goal and an assist, finished with four caused turnovers and three ground balls.

Senior Leanne Bittner finished with eight saves, including six in the first half while her counterpart Shelby Morris totaled 12, nine coming in the second half.

Stevenson returns to action on Tuesday, April 21 when the Mustangs travel to Lycoming for a Commonwealth Conference contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
