Box Score

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - Stevenson men's basketball senior Colby Giacubeno went 16-for-21 from the floor, including 13-for-18 from three-point range en route a school-record 48 points as the Mustangs held off in-state rival Hood 97-91 in the semifinals of the of the ECAC South Championship Wednesday at Franciscan University.

The win marks the second-straight 20-win season for Stevenson (20-9), the first time that has happened since the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons. The Mustangs also extended their postseason win streak to four while posting their third win in four meetings against the Blazers this year.

Giacubeno's 48 points broke the previous school record of 44 set by Wade Henninger on Feb. 16, 2004 versus Salisbury as he is just the second player in school history to score 40 points. Giacubeno's 13 three-pointers surpassed Greg Woody's mark of 10 set on Jan. 23, 2008 at Mary Washington.

Meanwhile, Stevenson's 97 points were the 10th-most in school history and the most since the team had 103 against Messiah on Jan. 15, 2014. There have been just eight 100-point games in team history.

Giacubeno, who came off the bench, scored 25 points in the first half on 8-of-10 shooting and seven three-pointers as the Mustangs built a 42-32 halftime lead. With the game tied at 9-9, Stevenson used a a quick 7-0 run capped by a lay-up from junior Julian Davis to take a 16-9 lead with 13:07 remaining.

After a lay-up by Corey Martin pulled the Blazers within five at 25-20, the Mustangs scored the next 14 points, including 11 in-a-row by Giacubeno, to take a 19-point lead with 4:27 left.

Led by seven points from Chris Cook, one of 10 men's finalists for the Jostens Trophy as the most outstanding player of the year in Division III, Hood finished the half on a 12-3 run to cut its halftime deficit to 10.

Despite 23 points from Giacubeno in the second half, the Blazers (15-13) managed to keep the game close thanks to hot shooting and a huge advantage in free throws. Hood shot 72.4 percent for the half and over the first 16-plus minutes, was 11-for-16 from the free throw line compared to 4-for-6 for Stevenson.

Two free throws from Luke Casey cut the Blazers' deficit to four at 77-73 with 5:43 remaining, but the Mustangs did not relinquish their advantage as they outscored Hood 20-18 the rest of the way. Giacubeno hit his six three-pointer of the half and 13th of the game and Stevenson went 9-for-11 from the free throw line over the final 3:32.

Junior guard Chris Day also finished in double figures for the Mustangs with 12 points while junior Christian Roberts just missed a double double with nine points and a career-high 10 assists, seven of which came in the second half. His 10 assists are the sixth-most in school history and the most since Feb. 23, 2007 when Steven Segears had 10 versus Keuka.

After missing the ECAC quarterfinal victory at McDaniel with a foot injury suffered in the Commonwealth Conference championship game, junior Erik Fisher totaled nine points and five rebounds in 31 minutes.

Stevenson, who was playing without junior Sean Farr, shot over 50 percent for the 12th time this season while tying a season-high with 34 made field goals.

Cook finished with 20 points to lead three Blazers in double figures. Terrell Buyck had 16 off the bench while Davon Hill had 15.
