Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Sophomore Olivia Monteiro scored the game winning goal as time expired as the No. 20 Stevenson women's lacrosse escaped with an 11-10 victory over Montclair State, Tuesday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.
The Mustangs (2-3) have won 14 of their last 15 games versus a non-ranked opponent dating back to last season, including five-straight. The team's three losses this season has come against teams that have been or are currently ranked at No. 1 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll.
The two teams traded goals in a minute span to open the game before Stevenson scored four-straight, two a piece by juniors Carli Bafford and Tori Wagner, to build a 5-1 lead with 17:21 remaining in the opening half.
But the Red Hawks (1-1) scored five of the final six goals to tie the game at 6-6 at the break. Aviana Paraggio scored the game-tying goal with one second on the clock on an assist by Kasey Maguire off a free-position attempt.
Trailing 6-2, Jenna Bussiere scored two-straight free-position goals for Montclair State as the team was 3-for-7 on free-position shots in the opening period. Bussiere was one of three Red Hawks to total two goals on the day.
The Mustangs totaled seven of the first eight shots in the first 7:55 before the Red Hawks outshot Stevenson 14-4 the remainder of the half.
Senior Kathryn Merrick won the opening draw control of the second half and scored her team leading 13th goal of the season just 14 seconds in to give the Mustangs the lead. Merrick would score just 1:26 later on an assist from sophomore Rachael Akshar to give the hosts a two-goal lead.
Merrick has totaled at least two goals in four of the team's five games this season.
Vanessa Rey picked up her first points of the season with a goal and an assist as Montclair State responded with back-to-back goals. With the game tied at 8-8, the teams traded goals over the final 14:53.
The Red Hawks were content to maintain possession and hold for the final shot with two minutes remaining, but a pass in front of the goal was picked up by junior Shelby Walter giving Stevenson a chance to score the go-ahead goal.
A shot by freshman Hollie Larrimore with two seconds remaining hit off the post and right to Monteiro who scooped up the ground ball. With one second remaining, the sophomore was able to put the ball in the back to give the Mustangs a one goal win.
Wagner finished with her second hat trick of the season, while senior Meg Gill totaled four draw controls, two ground balls and two turnovers.
In a nearly statistically even game, senior goalie Leanne Bittner dominated in saves, matching her season-high with 11. Alexandra Tepper and Rebecca Myers combined for just three for Montclair State.
Stevenson concludes its four-game home stretch on Friday, March 13 when the Mustangs host a non-conference contest versus Farmingdale State. Opening draw is scheduled 4:00 p.m.
