Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Led by a career-high 30 points by sophomore Sara Tarbert, the Stevenson women's basketball team won its 15th-straight game, 68-50, over second-place Albright in a Commonwealth Conference contest Wednesday afternoon at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
The Mustangs (17-2, 11-0 MAC), who have won 15 of their last 16 games at home dating back to last season including nine-straight, are three games shy of tying the program record for wins in a season. The 2005-06 currently holds the record with 20.
Stevenson, who has a three-game lead over the Lions (14-6, 8-3 MAC), also clinched a spot in the Commonwealth Conference playoffs for the second-straight season.
Tarbert, who totaled at least 20 points for the ninth time this season, become just the fourth player to total 30 points in the program's 20-year history. She is the first player in a Stevenson uniform to total 30 inside of Owings Mills Gymnasium. Tarbert also set the single game record with 13 made field goals.
After starting 1-for-9 from the field, Stevenson got a boost from junior Stephanie Martinez who picked up right where she left off last game, hitting a three-pointer on her first attempt of the night. She has totaled 11 in her past three games.
The Mustangs got their first lead of the game after a jumper by senior Kayla Kelly, who scored her 700th career point on the basket. She joins fellow classmate Kyarra Harmon as two of only eight players to accomplish that feat in the program's history.
Following a three-point play by Tarbert to extend the hosts lead to 21-16 with 9:07 left, the two teams combined to go just 5-for-22 from the field for the remainder of the first half.
Immediately after checking into the game, junior Brittney Page gathered a steal and picked up an assist as Martinez knocked down her second three-pointer of the game. On the defensive end, sophomore Kameron Ward drew an offensive charge for the Lions 15th turnover of the half.
Stevenson, who shot a season low 28.9 percent from the floor in the first half in eight home games, ended the half on a 10-2 run.
The Mustangs opened the second half on a 8-0 run, highlighted by six points from Tarbert to give Stevenson its largest lead of the game at 19. In eight home games this season, the Mustangs have outscored opponents 74-41 in the first five minutes of the second half, three times holding opponents to two points or less.
The Lions would go on a 9-1 run capped by a three-pointer by Shannon Thomas to cut their deficit to 11 with 6:50 remaining but that would be as close as they would get.
Tarbert led 11 different scorers for the Mustangs, including senior Abbey DeFeo who hit her third three-pointer of the year and classmate Kia Dawkins who concluded the scoring with a layup.
In addition to 30 points, Tarbert totaled eight rebounds, six steals, two assists and one block. Meanwhile, Martinez finished with nine points on three three-pointers.
Kelecia Harris, the 2013 Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year, finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds to lead Albright.
Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, February 7, when the Mustangs travel to Messiah for a Commonwealth Conference contest beginning at 3:00 p.m. The Mustangs defeated the Falcons, 57-49, in the first meeting between the two schools.
