Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Mandy Buell totaled seven points, including three free position goals, as the No. 6 Gettysburg handed the No. 18 Stevenson women's lacrosse team a 14-6 loss in the season opener for both teams Wednesday afternoon at Clark Field.
The Mustangs (0-1), who dropped their fourth-straight season opener, are 2-4 against opponents ranked in the IWLCA Division III Coaches Poll Top 20 Poll dating back to last season.
Wednesday marked just the second meeting between the two schools. The Bullets won 15-6 a year ago at Mustang Stadium.
Gettysburg (1-0), the 2011 national champions, scored the game's first six goals, including two each by Bridget Kenny and Katie Landry. The duo combined for five goals in the contest.
Junior Jordan Porretto got Stevenson on the board with a free-position goal with 8:33 remaining in the first half before senior Kathryn Merrick cut the deficit to 6-2 with her 94th career goal.
However, Kenny would score her third goal with 19 seconds remaining to give the hosts a five point lead at the break.
Two quick goals by the Bullets to open the second half extended their lead to 9-2.
The Mustangs answered by scoring three of the next four with senior Amanda LeGar contributing two goals and an assist to pull them within five, but that would be as close as Stevenson would get as the Bullets scored three-straight goals over the next 2:05, including two by Buell.
Buell finished with four goals and three assists.
LeGar led Stevenson with three goals and one assist, one point shy of her career-high, while Merrick added one goal and one assist. Senior Leanne Bittner and junior Maggie Lawder each finished with three saves while Keeler totaled three for the Bullets.
Dating back to last season, the Mustangs are 0-7 when scoring less than 10 goals.
Gettysburg, who was 4-for-9 on free position shots, held a 24-11 edge in shots and a 19-14 advantage in ground balls. The Mustangs led the Bullets in draw controls, 12-11.
Stevenson, who opens its 2015 season against three-straight ranked opponents, returns to action on Saturday, February 21 when the it travels to two-time defending national champion Salisbury. Opening draw is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
