Box Score GALLOWAY, N.J. – Fourth-seeded Randolph-Macon College eliminated No. 5 seed Stevenson University 3-1 in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship Galloway Regional at the Stockton Sports Center Friday afternoon. The set scores were 22-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-12.
The win snapped a 15-match win streak for the Mustangs (28-8), who were making their fifth-straight NCAA appearance. Randolph-Macon improves to 26-7 and faces the winner of Friday's Christopher Newport-Hunter match in Saturday's semifinal.
Sophomore Annika Schwartz led the Mustangs with 19 kills and 12 digs, while freshman Moriah Savage posted 12 kills. Junior Sara Bollinger handed out 44 assists, while sophomore Deanna Bradbury posted 29 digs defensively. Senior Kara Anderson finished with 15 digs, while junior Kristen Brooks added 14.
Stevenson trailed 12-6 in the first set but used an 8-2 run to tie the set 14-14 on an Schwartz kill. After a Yellow Jacket point, back-to-back Schwartz kills gave the Mustangs a 16-15 lead, their first lead since 3-2. Tied 17-17, three straight Stevenson points capped by a Savage kill gave it a 20-17 lead, and an eventual 25-22 win.
Randolph-Macon opened up a 20-15 lead in the second set before the Mustangs rattled off five straight points to tie the set 20-20 in a run that featured two Schwartz kills while taking advantage of a pair of Yellow Jacket attack errors. Tied 23-23, R-MC posted the final two points of the frame to tie the match.
Stevenson held a 9-7 lead in the third set when Randolph-Macon reeled off five straight points to take a 12-9 lead. The Yellow Jackets extended the lead to 15-10 on back-to-back Mustang attack errors. The Mustangs cut the lead to two twice, the last time on a Bollinger service ace that made it 18-16, but could get no closer.
Randolph-Macon jumped out to leads of 7-1 and 11-4 in the fourth set and from there was able to keep Stevenson at bay, maintaining at least a six-point lead the rest of the way en route to the victory.
Randolph-Macon hit .161 as a team, while limiting Stevenson to .109 hitting on the afternoon. The Yellow Jackets racked up 16 blocks while the Mustangs finished with five.
