Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Junior Stephanie Martinez went 5-for-5 beyond the arc while sophomore Sara Tarbert totaled a career-best 26 points as the Stevenson women's basketball team defeated Arcadia, 78-56, in a Commonwealth Conference contest Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
The Mustangs (16-2, 10-0), who have won 14-straight games, are four wins shy of tying the school record for wins in a season set by the 2005-06 team. The team is also 7-0 at home and 14-1 dating back to last season.
Led by six points by Tarbert, including the first four at the free throw line, Stevenson jumped out to a 10-2 lead. The Mustangs forced six turnovers in the games first four minutes and 24 for the game.
The Knights (10-10, 6-5) were forced to take a timeout after a layup and the foul by senior Ty Bender extended the hosts lead to eight. Bender finished the game with eight points, six assists and four rebounds.
A 6-0 run by Arcadia, including four points by Addy Crenny, cut the guests lead to just two. Stevenson went 0-for-3 from the field during the run, until junior Martinez stopped the run with her 26th three-pointer of the year.
Martinez would hit four three-pointers in a 2:41 span, the last coming with 10:33 remaining in the first half, extending the Mustangs lead to 22-9.
A layup by Tarbert with 4:15 remaining pushed Stevenson's lead to 18 before a three-pointer and two free throws by Dominique Hassinger cut the Knights deficit to 13.
Freshman Imani Sanders' three-pointer fell short as the shot clock expired but Sanders collected her own rebound and laid it in with nine seconds remaining in the half.
Arcadia started the second half with four-straight points, but following a technical foul on the Knights bench sent senior Kayleigh Guzek, to the line where she knocked down two free throws. A 91 percent shooter from the line this year, Guzek has not missed a free throw since December 19 and is 41-for-45 from the line.
The Mustangs had its best performance at the free throw line this season, converting on 27-of-33.
Martinez finished with 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field. Martinez now has 120 career three-pointers, moving her into fourth place all-time.
Meanwhile, Tarbert, who led 12 different scoreres for the Mustangs, totaled her eighth 20-point performance to go along with nine rebounds, three steals and one assist.
Crenny led the Knights with 14 points and 13 rebounds while Maureen Fiocca totaled a team-high 16 points.
Stevenson returns to action on Wednesday, February 4 when the Mustangs host second-place Albright beginning at 6:00 p.m. The Mustangs got a last second layup to defeat the Lions, 57-55, on January 3.
