Box Score CHESTER, Pa. – Trailing 47-44 with 12:38 remaining in the second half, the Stevenson women's basketball team ended the game on a 19-3 run as the Mustangs held off Widener, 63-52, in a Commonwealth Conference contest Saturday afternoon at Schwartz Athletic Center.
The Mustangs (15-2, 9-0 MAC), who posted their first win in Schwartz Athletic Center in three tries, extended their win streak to 13 while remaining unbeaten in conference play.
After a back and forth start to the game that saw five early lead changes, Stevenson went on mini 5-0 run to lead 11-7, capped by a three-pointer by junior Stephanie Martinez. Martinez, who finished with three three-pointers and ranks fifth all-time with 115 in her career, totaled at least three three-pointers for the 19th time.
Following two Mustang turnovers, the Pride (8-10, 2-7 MAC) answered with back-to-back three-point baskets by Allison Gallagher, before reclaiming the lead on their next possession.
The Mustangs called a timeout at the 11:26 mark after the team's fifth first half turnover led to the second fast break layup for Widener to give the hosts a four-point advantage. Stevenson totaled just three turnovers following the timeout compared to five for the Pride.
Senior Ty Bender and sophomore Sara Tarbert got into early foul trouble with Bender picking up her second foul with 12:07 remaining in the first while Tarbert was whistled for her second with 7:52 left. The Pride were 8-for-10 from the free throw line in the first half.
Gallagher, who totaled 12 of her 20 points in the first half, converted on a layup with 5:04 left in the half to give the hosts the largest lead of the game at five before a three-pointer by Martinez stopped the Prides 6-0 run.
Back-to-back jumpers for Kelly gave the visitors a 31-29 lead before sophomore Kameron Ward drew a charge for a big defensive stop. After a scoreless 3:03 by both teams, junior Caitlin Roy scored a layup after the third offensive rebound by senior Kayleigh Guzek to cap a 9-0 run to end the first half.
The Mustangs totaled 10 offensive boards in the first half, which led to six second chance points.
After two missed jumpers by Stevenson to open the half, Guzek collected another offensive rebound, which led to a Kelly layup and a six-point lead for the Mustangs.
Having done so numerous times this season, Stevenson was not able to start a run to open the second half as Widener responded with back-to-back buckets to end its 6:06 scoreless drought.
Stevenson went on a scoring drought of its own, 4:13, before Roy hit a jumper with 9:22 remaining to cut the deficit to just one, 47-46. The Mustangs gained momentum following a steal by Kyarra Harmon and Guzek layup before another fast break layup by freshman Imani Sanders to go up by eight.
The Pride would score just three points over the final 12:38, going 1-for-13 from the field with eight turnovers.
Tarbert finished with a team-high 17 points while Guzek chipped in 10. Guzek, Kelly and Martinez combined for 18 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end.
Bender finished with a career-best 10 rebounds to go along with four points and four assists. Meanwhile, Harmon finished with nine points and now has 700 for her career, becoming just the seventh player in program history to reach that milestone.
The Mustangs held a 48-30 rebounding advantage, including a season-best 22 offensive rebounds leading to 14 second chance points.
Stevenson returns to action on Monday, February 26 when the Mustangs travel to Mt. Aloysius for a non-conference contest beginning at 7:00 p.m.
