Mustangs Hold Off Lebanon Valley, 64-58, Remain Unbeaten in Conference Play

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – In a game that featured 13 ties and 14 lead changes, the Stevenson women's basketball team scored the final seven points, all at the free throw line, as the Mustangs held on to win their 12th-straight game, a 64-58 victory over Lebanon Valley Thursday evening at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

The Mustangs (14-2, 8-0 MAC) have now beaten all eight teams in the Commonwealth Conference and are 6-0 at home. It was also just the second win in six all-time meetings against Lebanon Valley.

After an extra 24-hour rest, both teams started fast but it was the home team who built an early six-point lead with four of the teams points coming off five Lebanon Valley turnovers.

The Dutchmen (11-5, 3-5 MAC) were looking to out run the conference leaders, scoring quickly in transition and reclaiming the lead at 11-10. Lebanon Valley, who scored 17 fast break points during the game, used a 9-0 run to go up by three.

A steal and a basket by senior Ty Bender brought the Mustangs back within two following a three-point basket by Taylor Umbrell. However, after the third tie of the game at 18-18, Lebanon Valley went on a 5-0 run as the Mustangs went 0-for-5 from the floor with three turnovers.

A three-pointer by senior Sabrina Vaitkevicius stopped the Dutchmen's run and sparked a 8-2 run for the Mustangs, which also saw a three-point play the old fashion way by senior Kayla Kelly.

Another three-pointer with 44 seconds left in the first half by Umbrell gave the visitors a 32-28 lead. The Dutchmen had three chances in the final 11 seconds of the half but could not convert and took their four-point lead into the break.

The first half saw seven ties and six lead changes, including four in the final 3:32. It is just the fifth time this season and third time during the winning streak the Mustangs have trailed at the half.

Stevenson opened the second half on an 8-0 run, highlighted by six points from sophomore Sara Tarbert and a second steal and layup by Bender. However, Umbrell responded with another three-pointer to give Lebanon Valley a one-point lead.

Following the 10th tie of the game, the Mustangs had back-to-back fast break layups after forcing two quick turnovers. But once again Umbrell stopped the run with a three-point basket.

A three-point play by Tarbert followed by a three-pointer by senior Kayleigh Guzek gave Stevenson a seven-point lead, its largest of the game with 10:52 remaining.

In a game of momentum, Lebanon Valley gained the edge with a 10-0 run to reclaim the lead at 56-53 after six-straight points by Bridget Rothert.

Neither team scored for 3:58 before Umbrell hit a deep two to give the Dutchem a 58-57 lead with 1:52 remaining. Down the other end, Bender converted on two free throws to give the Mustangs a one-point lead they would not relinquish.

Tarbert went to the line for a one-and-one with 20 seconds left to push Stevenson's lead to three. Down the other end, Rothert was called for a travel before getting off a three-pointer with 14.4 seconds left.

Tarbert scored 17 of her 21 points in the second half, while adding 10 rebounds, five steals, three assists and two blocks. Tarbert has scored at least 20 points for sixth time this season while also adding her 11th double double.

Both Bender and Kelly totaled 11 points while Bender added five steals, four assists and three rebounds. Kelly finished with seven rebounds and three assists.

Umbrell led the Dutchmen with 18 points on four three-pointers while also adding seven rebounds. Rothert added 16 points and nine assists.

Stevenson returns to action on Saturday, January 24 when the Mustangs travel to Widener for a Commonwealth Conference contest beginning at 1:00 p.m.
