Granger Heads in Late Winner to Send Stevenson Past Wilkes, 2-1

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md.  – Stevenson junior Calvin Granger latched on to a cross from senior Jon Grant and headed home from 10 yards in the 79th minute as the Mustangs overturned an earl 1-0 deficit and claimed a 2-1 victory over Wilkes, Saturday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.

The win sends Stevenson to 9-3 as the squad begins Commonwealth Conference play next Saturday while Wilkes falls to 2-9.

The visitors put pressure on the Mustangs early and were rewarded with the lead in the fifth minute as Ian Moyer headed home at the near post from five yards out off of a corner from Ryan Joyce.

Stevenson worked into the game from that point, though, earning a corner in the tenth minute, and then broke out for a four-on-three chance, but each time the cross went long.

The Mustangs nearly drew level in the 14th minute as freshman Cameron Wilson lashed a shot from the top of the box that was deflected and look destined for the lower corner, but Colonel goal keeper Patrick Loube was able to get down to the shot and hold.

In the 19th minute Wilkes came close to doubling its lead as the Colonels intercepted an errant clearance. Eric McAnena and Abdullah Albannay combined well down the right, however, Mustang junior keeper Ryan Callinan came up big to parry McAnena's effort, before Albannay headed over the bar. Two minutes later Callinan dove low to his right to save again and keep the game at 1-0.

The Mustangs got back on the front foot and were finally rewarded six minutes before the interval. Sophomore Adam Isennock worked well down the left flank before laying off for senior Dino Gilmanov who gained the end line and sent a low cross into the area that was then sent into the net by a Wilkes defender to bring the hosts back on terms.

Stevenson almost turned the deficit into a lead with a minute, but Loube pushed a free kick by sophomore Adnan Alic aside and then recovered to barely tip Gilmanov's rebound effort over the crossbar. The Mustangs outshot the Colonels in the opening frame, 9-7, but the teams went into the break knotted at 1-1.

Out of the break, both teams controlled spells of possession but could not construct concrete chances. With twenty minutes remaining before the end of regulation, Sarigolou looked to break the deadlock, but his free kick from 25 yards went just over the bar.

Just six minutes later, though, the Mustangs went ahead as Grant controlled down the left channel and squared in a cross where Granger met the ball at the near post and guided a header past Loube.

From there the Mustangs saw out the remainder of time to snap a two-game losing streak ahead of conference play.  allinan ended the contest with four stops to earn the win for Stevenson while Loube made six stops for the Colonels.

Stevenson continues its five-match home stretch next Saturday, Oct. 4 by hosting Arcadia at Mustang Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
