WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Stevenson football freshman Dylan Cummings scored on a 1-yard run with nine seconds remaining in the second quarter for the game's only score as the Mustangs posted the first shutout in school history with a 7-0 road victory over King's in the Middle Atlantic Conference opener for both teams Saturday at McCarthy Stadium.

Stevenson (2-0) also posted its first win in four all-time meetings against the Monarchs. It was also the team's first conference road win since a 55-22 victory at FDU-Florham on Sept. 20, 2013.

With 13 tackles, including eight solo, sophomore Cory Pietrzyk led a defensive effort that held King's to just 98 yards rushing and 6-of-15 from on third-down conversions. The Monarchs were also 0-for-2 inside the red zone while the Mustangs totaled three sacks and two interceptions.

Senior Dondre' Brown had six tackles and 1.5 sacks while senior Shane Clough and junior Billy Lewis each had an interception.

On 12 first half possessions, the two teams combined for seven punts and three turnovers.

After the defense forced the fourth King's punt of the half, the Stevenson offense began its second-longest drive of the day with 2:07 remaining in the second quarter. The Mustangs took the ball down to the King's 8-yard line where they faced 1st-and-goal. Two plays later, Cummings dove in from one yard out for his second touchdown of the season.

Stevenson held the Monarchs to just 39 yards rushing and 71 passing in the opening half.

King's was primed to take a 7-0 lead with 6:51 left in the first quarter when Kyle McGrath broke free for the goal line before he was stripped of the ball by junior Razonte Dunn. The ball then bounced out of the back of the enzone for the touchback.

The Monarchs also threatened at the start of the fourth quarter as Tyler Hartranft found Dan Kempa for a 59-yard pass and catch down to the Stevenson 15-yard line. However, the Mustang defense stood tall, forcing three-straight incompletions, the last of which came on fourth down. Lewis and sophomore Austin Tennessee had pass break-ups on second and third down, respectively.

Stevenson totaled just 163 yards offensively, but in addition to the play of its defense, under the direction of first-year coordinator Dustin Johnson, the Mustangs also benefited from 11 penalties for 111 yards on King's.

Sophomore Trey Lee rushed for 76 yards on 22 carries while sophomore Cortez Taylor had three receptions for 37 yards.

Hartranft completed 15-of-28 passes for 186 yards for King's while Kempa finished with seven catches for 119 yards.

Stevenson will makes its 2014 home debut next Saturday, September 20 when it hosts defending conference champion Lebanon Valley at Mustang Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
