TOWSON, Md. - Stevenson women's tennis junior Svetlana Widell and senior Katie Fersch posted victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, before teaming up to win at No. 2 doubles as the Mustangs won their first match of the season Sunday, 5-4 over local rival Goucher.
The victory for Stevenson (1-3) comes in the first meeting between the two schools since the Mustangs also won by a scored of 5-4 at home back on Apr. 11, 2011.
After giving the Gophers two wins by default at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles, Stevenson posted four singles and one doubles victory. At No. 2 singles, Widell defeated Leigh Oehrig 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 while Fersch beat Ryan Derham 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
Three of the four singles matches went to three sets. In addition to Widell and Fersch, freshman Emily Ostrander won against Amber Penaloza 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.
At No. 4 singles, freshman Ashley Pinter defeated Sarah Callander in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Widell and Fersch teammed up to post the only doubles victory for Stevenson at No. 2, taking down Sarah Callander and Claire Donnelly 9-8 (9-7).
The Mustangs return to action on Saturday, March 29 when they travel to King's (Pa.) for a 2:00 p.m., Freedom Conference contest.
