Box Score CHESTER, Pa. - Stevenson football sophomore Devonte Williams accounted for two touchdowns, including a 92-yard kickoff return, but four turnovers, two safeties and late fourth-quarter touchdown carried No. 12 Widener to a 34-23 Middle Atlantic Conference victory Saturday at Leslie C. Quick, Jr., Stadium.
The Mustangs (5-3, 4-3 MAC), who are now 0-7 all-time against nationally-ranked opponents, threw for over 200 yards for the third-straight game, but were intercepted three times and sacked seven times.
The last time Stevenson threw for over 200 yards in three consecutive games was during the first four games of the inaugural 2011 season.
While the Mustangs never led in the game, they trailed by 10 points or less for all but 19:35.
After the Pride's second safety of the game matched their largest lead at 28-16 with 7:39 remaining in the third quarter, Stevenson pulled within five on Williams' second touchdown of the day, an 11-yard pass from freshman Daniel Williams.
However, Widener (8-0, 7-0 MAC) sealed its sixth-straight home win after Terrant Morrison scored his second touchdown of the day on a 4-yard run with 3:35 left.
The Pride defense accounted for 11 points in their 11-point victory as they posted two safeties and a 69-yard interception return for a touchdown by Ameer Sorrell. The MAC's top-ranked rushing defense also held the Mustangs to minus-13 yards on 30 attempts.
With Widener holding a 12-point lead following Sorrell's interception return, Stevenson pulled within six at the half following a 7-yard touchdown pass from freshman Jeff Farrah to junior Anthony Reid with 15 seconds to play in the second quarter.
The Mustangs then had an opportunity to take the lead at the start of the third quarter after a Rashon Sorrell fumble on a punt return was recovered by sophomore Cory Pietrzyk at the Pride 7-yard line. However, Stevenson was held to a 21-yard field goal by sophomore Tim Sternfeld.
The drive was one of three for the Mustangs in the third quarter that started inside Widener's 40-yard line, but Stevenson totaled just 17 yards on 14 plays and only three points. The Mustangs controlled the ball for 10:21 of the third quarter, but the Pride managed to push their lead back to 12 following a 7-yard run by Morrison and a second safety.
The two teams combined for 38 first downs, 85 pass attempts and 26 penalties for 202 yards. Stevenson's 46 pass attempts were the second-most in school history behind the 51 the team attempted when it threw for a school-record 376 yards in a 51-26 loss to King's at home on Sept. 17, 2011.
Williams, who entered the game in the third quarter in relief of Farrah, completed 11-of-24 passes for 142 yards and one touchdown, but was intercepted twice. Farrah was 10-for-21 for 87 yards and one touchdown.
Reid and freshman Seth Jordan combined for 12 catches for 129 yards and one touchdown.
Senior Tim Campbell led the defense with 11 tackles, one shy of his career-high set at Lebanon Valley a year ago. Pietrzyk had eight solo tackles while junior Chris Coffie had two tackles, one sack and a forced fumble.
Stevenson hosts Wilkes next Saturday, November 8 in its regular-season home finale beginning at 1:00 p.m., at Mustang Stadium on Senior Day.
