Box Score WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior forward Yianni Sarioglou scored his fifth goal of the season to bring the Mustangs back level midway through the second half, but host Lycoming answered two minutes later, and added in a third with less than ten minutes from full time to claim a 3-1 victory over the Stevenson men's soccer team, Tuesday afternoon at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
The loss knocks Stevenson (10-7-2, 1-4-2 MAC) out of contention for a spot in the Commonwealth Conference tournament while Lycoming (13-2-3, 5-2 MAC) secured a bid in the knock-out playoff for the second consecutive season.
The game took on an offensive tone as the two teams combined for 31 shot attempts while the Mustangs earned five corner kicks to just one for the Warriors. Junior goal keeper Ryan Callinan was active in the Stevenson net, making the first of his six saves just four minutes into the match. His counterpart, Connor Keenan, recorded five saves for Lycoming.
The visiting Mustangs gained the first golden opportunity of the match on the stroke of 14 minutes as junior Andrew DeLuca stepped up to take a penalty kick. He drove a shot low to Keenan's left, but the Warrior keeper saved the shot to keep the match scoreless.
Keenan rose up for his defense again just a minute later, stopping a header by junior Calvin Granger. Two minutes later Lycoming broke the deadlock as Bill Kerr converted a free kick for a 1-0 home lead.
Kerr could have doubled the host's lead in the 26th minute, but this time Callinan came up with the heroics, stuffing the Warrior midfielder's PK.
Lycoming clung to its lead until the middle stages of the second half when Sarioglou nabbed his fifth goal off the season, slotting in the rebound after Keenan saved a shot by junior Zach Martin.
The tie lasted less than two minutes, however, as Nathan Harding restored the Lycoming lead with a breakaway goal, his third of the season.
With less than ten minutes remaining, Abdi Abdullahi converted his spot kick to boost the Warriors' lead to two.
Stevenson finishes out its regular season at Lebanon Valley on Saturday, November 1. The Mustangs will then await selections for the 2014 ECAC Division III Men's Soccer season, which will take place on Monday, November 10.
