Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – A valiant defensive effort by the Stevenson football team came up short against No. 22 Delaware Valley as the Aggies took advantage of two special teams mistakes and five touchdowns by Chris Smallwood and Rasheed Bailey en route to a 35-13 victory Saturday at Mustang Stadium.

The Mustangs (4-2, 3-2 MAC) held the nation's fourth-ranked scoring offense to its second-lowest total of the season, 15 points below its average. Stevenson held Delaware Valley scoreless in the first and third quarter, the first two quarters the team has been held without a point all season.

After being held scoreless for the first 24:08, the Aggies (6-0, 5-0 MAC) scored two touchdowns in just seven plays and 1:32 in the second quarter. Both scores were set up by special teams mistakes by the Mustangs that led to two Smallwood touchdown runs.

Smallwood scored from three yards out after sophomore punter Tim Sternfeld dropped the snap on 4th-and-7, giving Delaware Valley the ball at the Mustang 28-yard line. Smallwood's second touchdown came after the ensuing kickoff was fumbled at the Stevenson 31-yard line, leading to his seven-yard run just three plays later.

Entering today, the Mustangs had allowed their opponents just 20 second-quarter points in five games this season.

Leading just 14-0, the Aggies scored three fourth quarter touchdowns, two of which came from Rasheed Bailey who finished with six receptions for 150 yards. He entered the fourth quarter with just one catch for 16 yards.

Delaware Valley received the second-half kickoff and drove 68 yards in 13 plays and 7:32 before Stevenson totaled its second blocked kick on a 29-yard field goal attempt by the Aggies' Brandon Snyder.

Delaware Valley's two longest drives of the day both ended in blocked field goals after sophomore Austin Tennessee blocked Snyder's 33-yard attempt with 12:21 left in the second quarter that ended a 13-play, 61-yard drive.

Stevenson has now blocked seven kicks this season, including three by Tennessee. He finished the game with four tackles, one blocked kick, one forced fumble and one pass break-up.

Smallwood rushed for 147 yards and three touchdowns on 34 carries while Aaron Wilmer, the nation's second-highest rated passer, completed 14-of-22 passes for 260 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Smallwood, Wilmer and Bailey combined for 382 all-purpose yards.

Delaware Valley, who entered the game ranked ninth in the nation in total offense at 536.8 yards per game, totaled 457 on Saturday. The team also scored touchdowns on three of five trips inside the red zone where they have scored on 25-of-29 opportunities this season, including 20 touchdowns.

Defensively, the Aggies were allowing 151.2 yards per game rushing, but held the Mustangs to just 41.

Junior Anthony Reid totaled 239 all-purpose yards, including 171 on four kickoff returns. He also led Stevenson with four catches for 68 yards and a 43-yard touchdown from freshman Jeff Farrah on a reverse flea flicker that pulled Stevenson within 14-6 with 14:03 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Trey Lee ran for 56 yards on 15 carries while Farrah was 15-for-27 for 207 yards and one touchdown. He did not throw an interception, but was sacked five times.

Junior Billy Lewis led the defense with 11 tackles while five players had at least seven tackles, including sophomore Cory Pietrzyk who also added one tackle for loss and one interception. Senior Scott Lange had seven tackles as well, two of which were for loss.

Stevenson, who has now dropped back-to-back games against top-25 teams, is now 0-6 all-time versus ranked opponents, including 0-3 against Delaware Valley. The Mustangs return to action next Saturday, October 25 when they host a Middle Atlantic Conference contest versus FDU-Florham at Mustang Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m., on Homecoming and Family Weekend.
