Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's basketball junior Kayleigh Guzek sank two free throws to cut the deficit to just two with one minute remaining, but the Mustangs could not convert after forcing back-to-back turnovers giving them their first Commonwealth Conference loss this season, a 67-63 decision to Widener Saturday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
The Mustangs (5-5, 3-1 MAC) dropped their first Commonwealth Conference game since Feb. 16, 2013 after starting this season 3-0.
After starting the game 2-for-22 from the field, Stevenson would hit four of their next 10 shots, including a three-pointer by sophomore Stephanie Martinez, to tie the game at 18 with 5:10 remaining in the first half.
Martinez has made at least one three-pointer in 21 consecutive games dating back to Jan. 16, 2013.
Jen Egee hit a three-pointer with 2:08 remaining in the half to give Widener a 25-21 lead, but the Mustangs would close the half scoring five straight points to take a 26-25 lead.
After Stevenson stretched their lead to six to open the second half, the Pride (7-4, 2-2 MAC) took the largest lead of the game at 12 with 9:48 remaining.
A 14-3 run, capped by a layup by junior Kayla Kelly at the 6:17 mark cut the Mustangs deficit to just one. Kelly finished with a team-high 15 points while adding five rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.
With the Pride leading 65-63 with 59 seconds remaining, Stevenson had two opportunities to tie the game. The Mustangs first forced a travel by Joanna Persiano before Kelly missed on two free throw attempts. Junior Ty Bender then missed on a layup attempt after forcing the 32nd Widener turnover.
The Mustangs scored 22 points off turnovers while Widener held a 57-32 advantage in rebounds.
Bender finished with nine points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.
The Pride had two players post double doubles as Jen Egee totaled a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds and Courtney Colella had 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Persiano finished with 15 points and seven assists.
Stevenson returns to action tomorrow when they travel to face Roanoke in a non-conference contest beginning at 2:00 p.m. Last season the Mustangs defeated the Maroon 65-61.
