Flannelly Makes Eight Saves, Mustangs Drop CAC Home Opener to Wesley, 3-0

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Reigning CAC Offensive Player of the Week Joshua Chelleh had a hand in all three Wesley goals, totaling five points with two goals and one assist as the Wolverines posted a 3-0 decision over the Stevenson men's soccer team in its CAC home opener Wednesday at Mustang Stadium.

The Mustangs (4-5-1, 0-2 CAC) have now lost three-straight for the first time since Sept. 25, 2010 when they also dropped a 3-0 decision to Wesley on the road at Miller Stadium. The Wolverines have also won three-straight in the series.

After a scoreless opening 15 minutes, Wesley (4-3-3, 1-0-2 CAC) opened the scoring when Dan Featherer played a long ball into Chelleh who netted his third goal of the season.

The Wolverines doubled their lead less than two minutes later when Chelleh's corner was finished at the near post by reigning CAC Defensive Player of the Week Nico Scarpato.

Senior goalie Ryan Flannelly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) kept the Mustangs in the game, recording eight saves, including five in the first half, before giving way to freshman Pat Carey (Brooklyn Park/North County) who played the final 11 minutes in making his third appearance of the season.

Chelleh finished the scoring in the 63rd minute when he intercepted a back pass, then beat Flannelly for his fourth goal of the season and his second with at least two goals.

Stevenson was able to exert some pressure in the second half, gaining a 3-0 advantage in corners. Senior Jeff Hohl (Sykesville/Century) came close to getting the Mustangs on the board, but his header in the 23rd minute went just wide, extending the team's scoreless streak to four games and over 385 minutes.

Wednesday's game featured 30 fouls and seven yellow cards.

Stevenson looks to snap its three-game skid on Saturday on the road where it has won two of the last three. The Mustangs travel to St. Mary's (Md.) for a 4:00 p.m., contest with the Seahawks who edged out a 3-2 victory in double overtime in last year's meeting.
