Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Stevenson women's basketball team forced Mary Washington into a season-high 24 turnovers, but the Eagles shot 46.2 percent from the floor as they posted a 64-36 victory over the Mustangs in the CAC opener for both teams Wednesday night at Owings Mills Gymnasium.
The conference leader in scoring offense, Stevenson (4-3, 0-1 CAC) was held to a season-low 36 points and without a three-pointer for the third time this season.
Meanwhile, Mary Washington scored 34 of their 64 points in the paint and held a 40-24 edge in rebounds.
The Eagles (50-, 1-0 CAC), who received 34 votes in this week's D3Hoops.com Top 25 Poll, jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first six minutes before Stevenson cut the deficit to two on a jumper by freshman Sabrina Vaitkevicius (New Castle, Del./William Penn) and two free throws from freshman Pee-Jay Gunn (Cheltenham/Frederick Douglas).
However, Mary Washington answered with back-to-back three-pointers from Brieneke Matthes and Katie Wimmer to take a 12-4 lead with 11:03 remaining before closing the half on a 7-0 run over the final 4:36 to push their lead to 14 at the half.
The Mustangs opened the second half with a 7-2 run to get the lead under 10 at 30-21, but the Eagles responded with the game's next 10 points to push their advantage to 40-21 with 13:35 to play.
Senior Daniela Poss (Brookeville/Good Counsel) led Stevenson with eight points and five rebounds while Gunn finished with six points and five rebounds. Senior Amanda Craig (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) totaled four points and five steals.
The Mustangs were limited by 27 turnovers and a 28.3 field goal percentage.
Mary Washington was led by 18 points and five rebounds from Wimmer while Aubrey Howland had 10 points and five rebounds off the bench. Aby Diop totaled five points, a game-high 10 rebounds and four steals.
Stevenson travels to St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m., tip-off with the Seahawks.
