Strong Defensive Effort Falls Short, Rowan Edges Mustangs in NCAA Rematch

Box Score

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Nina Fragoso scored the game's lone goal in the 57th minute as Rowan edged out a 1-0 victory over the Stevenson women's soccer team Saturday at Mustang Stadium in a rematch of last year's NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship first round contest.

The Mustangs (8-4-2), ranked at No. 8 in the NSCAA South Atlantic Region, limited the Profs to just seven shots while turning away nine corner kicks, including six in the second half.

The loss snapped Stevenson's six-game unbeaten streak and was just the team's second in seven games at Mustang Stadium.

Meanwhile, the win was the six-straight for the Profs (8-3) who won for the third time in five road games this season.

Neither team could get much going offensively as both accounted for three, first-half shots while Stevenson senior Brittany Ross (Millersville/Severna Park) and the Profs' Lyndsie Bernardini each had one first-half save.

However, Fragoso manages to get Rowan on the board when her shot from inside the box deflected off a Stevenson defender and past Ross for her third goal of the season.

While Ross had just two saves, the Mustang defense was strong all afternoon as three different players helped prevent three goals for the Profs by making clears inside the box. The first came with just under 18 minutes left in the opening half when junior Kayla Curry (Timonium/John Carroll) headed out a Prof corner kick from the goal line.

Later in the half, sophomore Catherine Madden (Bethesda/Walter Johnson) cleared a ball from off the line before freshman Gabrielle Kuhar (Oceanview/Holy Spirit) had a team save in the 68th minute to keep Stevenson within striking distance.

Bernardini also had two saves for Rowan who held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Stevenson travels to Wesley on Wednesday for a CAC contest with the Wolverines beginning at 7:00 p.m.
