Mustangs Sweep Defending CAC Champion Frostburg, Move Into Second Place

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson women's volleyball senior Kristin Steinnagel (Eldersburg/Liberty) totaled seven kills and three total blocks as the Mustangs handed defending CAC champion Frostburg State a 25-14, 25-21, 25-20 loss Tuesday at Owings Mills Gymnasium.

Sevenson (17-2, 2-1 CAC) won its fifth-straight overall and extended its home winning streak to four The team is 8-2 at Owings Mills Gymnasium this season.

The win also moved the Mustangs into a tie for second-place in the CAC standings with Mary Washington who is also 3-1 in conference contests. Both teams are one game behind Salisbury who is 4-0 in the CAC with two of those wins coming against Stevenson and the Eagles.

The Mustangs snapped a two-game losing streak against the Bobcats dating back to a 25-22, 25-20, 19-25, 25-23 victory on Oct. 4, 2008. They have won four of the last seven in the series against Frostburg State and are 3-2 under fifth-year head coach Dave Trumbo.

Freshman Jessica Gieselman (Westminster/Winters Mill) had 30 assists and 17 digs for Stevenson while junior Avery Gabbard (Arnold/Broadneck) had 13 kills and seven digs.

Both teams combined for 40 attack errors, a .088 hitting percentage, 12 service errors and 10 reception errors.

The Bobcats (10-12, 2-1 CAC) posted a .016 hitting percentage and had just 25 kills compared to 23 attack errors, most of which were the result of 18 Stevenson blocks.

The Mustangs rallied from deficits in the first two sets, including a 5-1 margin in the first and a 14-8 shortfall in the second. In the first, they rallied with six-straight points, including five on the serve of senior Amy Rudolph (North East/Rising Sun), to take a 7-5 advantage. They never trailed the rest of the way.

In the second set, Gabbard totaled five kills as Stevenson battled back from a 14-8 deficit and a 19-14 margin.

Steinnagel had five of her seven kills in the third set that featured seven ties and six lead changes. She and Gabbard combined for nine of the team's 16 kills while Gieselman added nine kills.

Freshman Samantha Perillo (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) totaled 10 of her game-high 22 digs in the third set. Her 22 digs were three shy of her career-high of 25 set versus Catholic on September 3.

The Bobcats dropped their fourth consecutive game and are now 1-3 on the road this season after going 34-4 and 8-1 on the road a year ago. They were led by eight kills, six digs and two total blocks from Nicole Absher. Kylie Arrington had 17 assists and 16 digs while Maddie White and Amber Winterling added 16 and 15 digs, respectively.

Stevenson returns to action on Friday at the Goucher Invitational. The Mustangs face the host Gophers at 3:00 p.m., before taking on CAC rival Marymount (Va.) at 5:00 p.m., in a non-conference contest.
