Box Score OWINGS MILLS, Md. - On a night when the Stevenson field hockey team honored seniors Ashley Beam (Reisterstown/North Carroll) and Brittany Martin (Hampstead/Hereford), it was a pair of underclassmen that led the way as the Mustangs picked up a key CAC victory with a 5-0 shutout over Hood Tuesday at Mustang Stadium.
Stevenson (5-11, 2-4 CAC) posted its second win in the last three games, but more importantly, moved into sole possession of the sixth and final spot in the CAC Field Hockey Championship which begins on Sunday, October 30.
Sophomore Leigh Willing (Princess Anne/Holly Grove Christian) and freshman Ariella Hopp (Jarrettsville/Institute of Notre Dame) each scored twice as both tied a career-high with four points.
For Willing, it was her third, four-point game this season while Hopp extended her streak of games with at least one point to four.
The Mustangs opened the scoring just 1:30 into the game when Willing scored on a penalty corner off an assist from sophomore Allyson Moody (New Windsor/Westminster) for what proved to the game-winner, the second of her career.
Willing struck again just over 11 minutes later off an assist from junior Kaitlyn May (Arnold/Archbishop Spalding) before Hopp netted her first to give Stevenson a 3-0 halftime lead.
May added her team-leading 12th goal of the season midway through the second half while Hopp capped the scoring with under nine minutes to play to provide the final margin of victory.
May now has a team-best 26 points this season while Hopp and Willing have 22 and 21, respectively, marking the first time in school history that the team has had three players with 20 or more points in a season.
Junior Kelsi Zimmerman (Odenton/Arundel) made one second-half save in earning her second shutout of the season.
Ashley Stennett finished with four saves for the Blazers (3-10, 0-6 CAC) who were outshot 20-2, including 9-0 in the opening 35 minutes. The Mustangs also held a 14-3 edge in penalty corners.
The Mustangs will wrap up the home portion of their 2011 schedule on Thursday with a non-conference contest versus McDaniel beginning at 5:00 p.m.
