Box Score 2 UTICA, N.Y. - Stevenson men's volleyball freshman Austin Jacoby (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) was named Most Valuable Player of the SUNYIT Invitational while the Mustangs started the season with four consecutive wins for the second-straight year, posting victories over host SUNYIT and Bard Sunday to capture the team title.
Stevenson (4-0) opened the day with a 25-18, 25-18, 23-25, 25-11 win over SUNYIT before capturing the tournament championship with a sweep of Bard, 25-17, 25-21, 25-22.
A year ago, the Mustangs started the season with a school-record seven-straight wins while wing 10 of their first 15.
Jacoby earned MVP honors after totaling a tournament-best 71 kills and a .395 hitting percentage. He also ranked second on the team with 23 digs and added five total blocks.
On Sunday, Jacoby had 27 kills and eight digs, committing just two errors in 49 attempts for a .510 hitting percentage. He had 15 kills with no errors in 27 attempts versus SUNYIT while adding five digs before posting 12 kills and three digs against Bard.
Stevenson used a team effort in beating the host Wildcats as four players had at least seven kills. Freshman Kalani Soeda (Kaneohe, Hawaii/LeJardin Academy) had a career-high 10 kills while posting his first career double double with 10 total blocks. He almost had a triple double, but finished just short with six digs.
Freshman Eddy Klepper (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) added seven kills and eight blocks, both career-highs, while freshman Jon Martin (Warwick, Pa./Warwick) had eight kills, six digs and three total blocks.
Sophomore Kyle Diller (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) totaled three kills, 39 assists and five blocks.
Against Bard, Diller added 24 assists and seven digs.
Stevenson makes its home debut on Tuesday when it hosts a NECVA Metro Division contest versus Lancaster Bible at Owings Mills Gymnasium beginning at 7:00 p.m.
