OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Much like Saturday's win
over Delaware Valley, Stevenson field hockey freshman Leah Warner
(Pasadena/Northeast) scored her first collegiate goal on
what proved to be a game-winner as the Mustangs opened the season
with their third consecutive victory as they downed Neumann 1-0
Sunday in the Black-Eyed Susan Tournament.
The Mustangs (3-0) are the first team in program history to
start a season with three-straight wins and just as noteworthy is
the fact that all three have come by shutout as the team has
outscored its opponents, 7-0.
Stevenson also holds a 75-12 edge in shots over its first three
games with all 12 of those coming against Delaware Valley. The
Mustangs also hold a 31-8 margin in penalty corners.
Entering Sunday's game, Stevenson needed five points to overtake
FDU-Florham for the Black-Eyed Susan Tournament title, but came up
just half-a-point short after the first half ended in a scoreless
tie.
The tournament champion is decided on a point system in which
teams receive three points for a win, one for winning a half and
half-a-point for a tie in a half.
For their efforts, junior Ashley Beam
(Reisterstown/North Carroll) and freshman Leah Willing (Princess
Anne/Holly Grove Christian) were named to the
all-tournament team.
Complete tournament results can be found here.
After a scoreless 49 minutes, Warner managed to put the Mustangs
ahead for good after redirecting a rebound off Knight keeper
Lindsey Kasecamp who stopped an initial shot from sophomore
Kaitlyn
May (Arnold/Archbishop Spalding).
Despite not having to make save, senior Kara Zimmerman
(Odenton/Arundel) earned her second shutout of the season
and the eighth of her career.
Stevenson dominated the game, out-shooting Neumann 20-0 and
holding a 14-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Kasecamp finished with 12 saves for the Knights (0-2).
The Mustangs look to extend their winning streak to a
program-record four on Wednesday when they open their CAC schedule
at York (Pa.). Game time is at 4:00 p.m.
