FROSTBURG, Md. - Despite 10 kills and 15 digs
from sophomore Avery Gabbard
(Arnold/Broadneck), the Stevenson women's volleyball team
could not overcome a tough Frostburg State defense that totaled
nine blocks as the Bobcats won
25-23, 25-22, 25-23 Wednesday night at Bobcat Arena.
The loss was just the second
overall for Stevenson (14-2, 2-1 CAC) and first since September 3
when the team also fell to a CAC rival in Mary Washington.
Gabbard totaled her fourth double double in the last five
matches and fifth this season, but also had four attack errors.
Senior Alex Mercer
(Eldersburg/Liberty) had four kills, but also seven errors
in 20 attempts as Stevenson's top two hitters had 16 kills and 15
errors.
The Mustangs rallied from a 9-6 deficit in the first set to take
an 11-9 lead before battling back from a 20-16 margin to tie the
set at 23-23. However, a kill by Frostburg State's Amber Winterling
and a service ace by Jamie Thomas gave the team the two-point
victory.
Stevenson led 15-13 in the second set before a 7-1 Bobcat run
led Frostburg State (16-2, 2-0 CAC) to a commanding 2-0 lead.
Neither team led by more than three points in the third set as
the Mustangs jumped in front 4-1. Three-straight points by the
Bobcats gave them an 18-17 advantage and they never trailed in
snapping a two-game losing streak and remaining unbeaten at home at
10-0.
Junior Alexa Carney
(Towson/Towson) had four kills and 13 digs while freshman
Jessica
Gieselman (Westminster/Winters Mill) added five kills,
25 assists and seven digs. Junior Amy Rudolph (North
East/Rising Sun) finished with nine digs and junior
