WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Alyssa Johnston scored
her second goal to give Nazareth a one-goal lead over Stevenson
with 4:50 remaining in the game and Ann Sessler turned away
three Stevenson shots in the final four minutes as the
20th-ranked Yellowjackets edged the Mustangs 11-10 Wednesday to
remain unbeaten.
Trailing 9-7 with 22:09 left in the second half, the Mustangs
(6-2) scored three consecutive goals, including the go-ahead tally
on a free position shot by junior Megan Weiss
(Odenton/Seton) with 9:56 to play.
However, Nazareth tied the game for the sixth time when Kristine
Olijnyk scored her second of the half just 19 seconds later.
Neither team would score again until Alyssa Johnston netted
the eventual game-winner with under five minutes remaining.
Stevenson had some opportunities in the final four minutes as
the result of three Nazareth turnovers, three shots and three free
position attempts, but Sessler had three of her 10 saves to send
the Mustangs to just their second loss in their first eight games.
Both of Stevenson's losses have come to undefeated teams as
McDaniel was 4-0 before suffering its first loss Tuesday, 13-12 to
Connecticut College. The Mustangs were receiving votes in this
week's IWLCA poll after being ranked for the first time in
school history last week.
Nazareth (3-0) jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the game's first
seven minutes behind two free position goals from Alyssia Roberts
and Jennifer Roberts. The team maintained its two-goal advantage
after Roberts' second goal at 11:10 gave the Yellowjackets a 5-3
advantage.
The Mustangs took their first lead with 4:41 following
three-straight goals from senior Lauren Zegowitz
(Gaithersburg/Damascus), junior Lisa Baker
(Westminster/Westminster) and sophomore Spencer
Kraus (Mt. Airy/South Carroll).
Erinn Wood netted her first goal at 3:29 off a feed from Cregan
to tie the game at 6-6 at halftime.
Baker and Weiss finished with three goals each to lead the
Stevenson offense while Zegowitz had one goal and one assist.
Zegowitz now has 184 career points on 128 goals and 54 assists,
leaving her only four shy of Heather Valunas' school record.
Sophomore Jenny Schroeder (Severna Park/Seton
Keough) had 12 saves, one shy of her season-high.
Olijnyk, Johnston and Jennifer Young each had two goals for the
Yellowjackets while Cregan and Michelle Cook totaled one goal and
one assist.
Stevenson will face its second-straight nationally-ranked
opponent on Saturday when it travels to Washington, D.C., to take
on No. 10 Catholic. Game time is at noon.
