Mustangs' Second Half Effort Not Enough to Overcome First Half Deficit

Box Score

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Stevenson women's basketball team scored just eight first half points and despite outscoring Mary Washington by 11 in the second, could not overcome a 24-point halftime deficit as the Mustangs dropped their fifth-straight game to start the season, 54-41 Wednesday at Goolrick Gymnasium.

Stevenson (0-5, 0-2 CAC) posted its lowest point total in a half since Feb. 24, 2006 when it also scored eight in the first half of a 53-46 loss to Keuka at home. In that game, the Mustangs trailed 29-8 at halftime.

In its last three games at Goolrick Gymnasium, Stevenson has totaled just 97 points, scoring 18 points or less in five out of six halves.

The Mustangs have also failed to shoot over 30 percent in either game, combining to go 31-of-134 from the floor for 23.1 percent.

Senior JaQuelia Conley (Columbia/Montrose Christian) scored four of her game-high 15 points in the first half, hitting 2-of-6 attempts from the field as Stevenson shot 19.0 percent, going 4-for-21. The team also had 13 turnovers and were outrebounded, 23-18.

The Mustangs were a much different team in the second half, outscoring the Eagles 33-22 while holding them to only 25.8 percent shooting and getting to the free throw line 16 times.

Conley led the charge with 11 points while sophomore Joy Bettis (Columbia/Montrose Christian) added eight.

Senior Kristen Steiner (Forest Hill/Fallston) also added three points and eight rebounds and finished the game with 10 rebounds, marking her fourth consecutive game with at least 10. She is currently third in the CAC in rebounding at 11.3 per game.

Sophomore Sam Murray (Reisterstown/St. Paul's) finished with seven rebounds, one shy of her career-high set versus Wesley on Feb. 20, 2010.

Katie Wimmer led a well-balanced attack for Mary Washington (3-2, 1-0 CAC) with 13 points. Sam Partonen and Rachel Martin each had eight points as nine players scored at least three points for the Eagles.

Stevenson returns home looking to snap its 13-game losing streak when it hosts St. Mary's (Md.) at Owings Mills Gymnasium beginning at 2:00 p.m.
