STEVENSON, Md. - Stevenson women's basketball
junior guard JaQuelia Conley
(Columbia/Montrose Christian) became the
first player to score 30 points in a game in five years as the
Mustangs won their second-straight, 63-61 over Carnegie Mellon in a
non-conference contest Sunday at Student Union Gymnasium.
Conley scored a career-high 31 points as she is the first player
to score 30 points in a game for Stevenson (3-7) since Tanisha
Foster had 35 in a 75-61 win over Keystone at home on Dec. 10,
2005.
With 23 points in Saturday's 69-55 CAC victory over Hood, Conley
is also the first player to score 20 points in back-to-back games
since Foster had 20 and 21 versus Marymount (Va.) and Salisbury on
Jan. 12 and 16, respectively.
Sunday marked the fourth game out of the last six in which
Conley tied or set a new career-high. She is averaging 18.8 points
during that time and has raised her season scoring average from 8.0
points to 14.5 per game.
Conley, who was 12-of-16 from the floor and 3-of-5 from
three-point range, totaled 19 of the Mustangs' first 23 points,
including all eight during an 8-0 run as they rallied from a
seven-point deficit to take a 23-22 lead with 8:15 left in the
first half.
Carnegie Mellon (7-3) led by as many as nine with 12:07
remaining before an 11-2 run by Stevenson tied the game at 50-50
with 7:32 to play.
The second half featured five ties and five lead changes and was
tied for the final time at 61-61 with 41 seconds left on a lay-up
by freshman forward Brittney Bryant
(Frederick/Tuscarora).
After junior forward Kristen Steiner
(Fallston/Fallston) forced a Tartan turnover with 30
seconds remaining, sophomore guard Amanda Craig
(Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) converted what proved to
be the game-winning lay-up, capping a 4-0 run for the Mustangs.
Craig finished with 13 points, four rebounds and three steals
while Steiner had nine points and seven rebounds. Stevenson's
starters combined for 58 of the team's 63 points.
The two-point victory was the second in three home games this
season for the Mustangs after they won just three in 11 contests
last year. It was also the 98th career win for head coach Chris
Ramer.
Nicole Vaccarella had 19 points to lead Carnegie Mellon who had
its four-game winning streak snapped. Jennifer Larsen added 16
points and seven rebounds while Rachelle Roll also finished with
seven rebounds to go along with 11 points.
Stevenson hosts a CAC contest with Mary Washington on Wednesday
at 5:00 p.m.
