ASHLAND, Va. - The Stevenson University women's
lacrosse team scored seven of the game's final 11 games while
outscoring Randolph-Macon 5-3 in the second half en route to a
15-12 non-conference victory Monday afternoon in a game that was
rescheduled from Friday, March 6.
The win was the fourth-straight non-conference victory for the
Mustangs (8-6) who have also won four out of their last five
overall.
With the game tied at 8-8, Stevenson received back-to-back goals
from juniors Lauren Zegowitz
(Gaithersburg/Damascus) and Brittany Connelly
(Catonsville/Catonsville) to take a two-goal lead before
Laura Fox scored with just one second remaining in the first half
to cut lead to one at the half.
Stevenson opened the second half by scoring three of the first
four goals, all on free position shots by junior Kristyna
Hnizda (Manchester/North Carroll), sophomore Megan
Weiss (Odenton/Seton) and sophomore Lisa Baker
(Westminster/Westminster) to take a 13-10 advantage with
16:59 left.
Hnizda led the Mustangs with four goals with Baker
also totaling four points on two goals and two assists.
Zegowitz finished with three goals, totaling her ninth hat trick in
14 games this season. She leads the team with 41 goals this season.
Weiss had two goals and one assist while freshman
Spencer Kraus (Mt. Airy/South Carroll) added two
goals.
Zegowitz's third goal with 4:01 remaining gave Stevenson its
largest lead of the game at 15-11 after senior Mandi Carr
(Crownsville/Old Mill) scored off an assist from Baker at
10:20.
The Mustangs outscored Randolph-Macon 5-3 in the second half
despite being outshot 17-9.
Freshman Jenny Schroeder (Severna Park/Seton
Keough) made eight saves, including six in the second
half, to pick up her seventh win while sophomore Devan
Malone (Highland/River Hill) made three in 17-plus
minutes.
Morgan Hutchinson led the Yellow Jackets (7-6) with six goals.
Alex Flammia had eight saves.
Stevenson concludes its 2009 regular season with a CAC contest
at Hood on Tuesday beginning at 4:00 p.m.
