OWINGS MILLS, Md. - For the second-straight
game, the Stevenson University women's lacrosse team rallied from a
three-goal deficit to tie the game late in the second
half against a team ranked in the top-20, but came up short by
one goal as No. 13 Catholic held off the Mustangs 12-11 Saturday at
the Caves Atheltics Complex.
On Thursday, Stevenson (3-4) was edged by No. 20 Elizabethtown,
16-15.
The Cardinals (6-2), who scored two of the game's final
three goals over the last seven minutes, got the game-winner from
Katie Miller with 6:12 remaining, just 54 seconds after Lindsay
Davenport broke a 10-10 tie.
Trailing 7-3 less than three minutes into the second
half, the Mustangs scored six of the next eight goals to
tie the game at 9-9.
Junior Lauren Zegowitz (Gaithersburg/Damascus)
had two goals during the run while junior Kristyna Hnizda
(Manchester/North Carroll) and sophomore Lisa
Baker (Westminster/Westminster) added a goal and an assist
each.
Hnizda finished with three goals and four points to lead the
Mustangs with Zegowitz adding three goals and Baker totaling two
and one assist.
Stevenson outscored the Cardinals 8-6 in the second half after
outshooting them 18-11.
Trailing 12-10, four of the Mustangs' seven shots in
the final 3:42 were either wide or blocked while two were saved by
Melissa Brashear. Stevenson's final tally came with just 25 seconds
left when sophomore Megan Weiss (Odenton/Seton)
netted her 11th of the season.
Brashear and freshman Jenny Schroeder (Severna
Park/Seton Keough) each made 10 saves in goal while Laura
Haring led Catholic with four goals and five points.
Stevenson looks to snap its three-game losing streak on
Wednesday when it travels to Notre Dame (Md.) for the last of five
consecutive non-conference games. Game time is at 4:00 p.m.
