WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Junior Lauren
Zegowitz (Gaithersburg/Damascus) and sophomore
Lisa Baker (Westminster/Westminster) each had four
goals and an assist, but Blair Thompson's free position goal with
5:54 left proved to be game-winner as Dickinson held on to beat the
Stevenson University women's lacrosse team, 14-12 Thursday night at
Lake Lytal Park.
The win was the fourth consecutive for the Red Devils (4-1) who
began the year ranked at No. 15 in the IWLCA/Under Armour Division
III Weekly Poll.
Freshman Jenny Schroeder (Severna Park/Seton
Keough) made a career-high 17 saves, including 12 in the
first half where Dickinson outshot the Mustangs 23-14 and took an
8-4 lead into halftime.
However, Stevenson (3-2), who received votes in last week's
national poll, outscored the Red Devils 7-3 over the first 20
minutes of the second half to tie the game at 11-11 after the
second goal of the game from junior Brittany Connelly
(Catonsville/Catonsville) with 10:22 remaining.
Back-to-back goals by Sunnie Ko and Thompson put Dickinson in
front by two before Zegowitz's fourth goal of the game pulled the
Mustangs to within 13-12 with 4:48 to play.
Stevenson had a chance to tie the contest with 20 seconds
remaining, but Jessie Clark's 11th save preserved the win for
the Red Devils who added a meaningless goal with one second left.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 lead on consecutive goals by
Zegowitz in the first five minutes before Dickinson scored eight of
the next 10 to take a four goal advantage at the half.
Senior Tricia Kauffman (Cockeysville/Dulaney)
finished with three ground balls, three draw controls and two
caused turnovers while senior Mandi Carr (Crownsville/Old
Mill) had five draws.
Stevenson returns to action next Thursday, March 19 when it
hosts a non-conference contest with Elizabethtown beginning at 3:30
p.m.
