STEVENSON, Md. - The Stevenson University
women's basketball team jumped out to a 19-7 lead in the game's
first seven minutes and never trailed while scoring 31 points off
turnovers in beating Gallaudet at Carolyn Manuszek Student Union
Gymnasium Wednesday night, 63-45.
The Mustangs (5-16, 3-9 CAC) were led by its two seniors,
forward Ashley Burrell (Baltimore/Institute of Notre
Dame) who had 12 points and six rebounds, both team-highs,
and guard Tara Galvin (Lititz, Pa./Manheim
Township) who added 10 points and three assists.
Freshman guard Qiana Coleman (Ellicott City/Mount
Hebron) had six points and tied her career-high with five
assists for the second-straight game.
The duo combined to score eight of the team's first 19 points as
Stevenson built a 12-point advantage with 12:59 remaining in the
first half.
The Bison (5-15, 0-12 CAC) answered with a 9-0 run to cut the
lead to three with 7:32 left, but a 13-4 run by the Mustangs pushed
it back to 12 and they took a 10-point lead into halftime, 34-24.
Burrell and Galvin scored 17 of the team's 34 first half points
with Burrell adding 10 and Galvin seven. The team also scored 19
points off 17 Gallaudet tunrovers.
Stevenson never let the lead slip below double digits in the
second half and led by as many as 23 with 8:23 to play.
The Mustangs received 30 of its 63 points off the bench,
highlighted by seven points and five rebounds from sophomore
forward Cecelia Laskauskas (Arbutus/Danbury
(Conn.)), both career-highs. Freshman guard
Breonna Brewer (Baltimore/Polytechnic) added six
points.
Nukeitra Hayes totaled 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the
Bison while Ursa Rewolinski added eight points and a game-high 13
rebounds.
Stevenson will have a week off before hosting No. 24-ranked
Marymount (Va.) next Wednesday, February 11. The Saints survived a
scare from the Mustangs earlier this season before holding on for a
66-60 victory on January 17.
