WASHINGTON, D.C. - Stevenson women's basketball
sophomore guard Amanda Craig (Wilmington, Del./St.
Elizabeth) scored a career-high 13 points, but Gallaudet
used an 11-3 run to start the second half that erased a
three-point halftime deficit en route to a 57-51 victory Wednesday
night in the CAC opener for the Mustangs.
The win snapped a 63-game CAC losing streak for the Bison (3-3,
1-1 CAC) and was their first in the conference since a 65-61
victory versus St. Mary's (Md.) at home. It was also their first
win in the last eight meetings versus Stevenson.
The Mustangs (1-5, 0-1 CAC) led 25-22 at halftime before
Gallaudet took a 33-28 lead with 15:44 remaining. Four different
Bison scored during the run while the Mustangs missed their first
four shots from the floor.
Stevenson did manage to score 17 of their 25 first half
points off of 13 Bison turnovers.
Leading by three midway through the second half, Gallaudet used
an 8-0 run, during which Stevenson missed six-straight
shots, to take its largest lead of the game at 11, 45-34 with
7:42 to play.
Down 11 with just under six minutes to play, the Mustangs
would outscore the Bison 9-2 to cut the lead to four with
2:03 remaining when junior guard JaQuelia Conley
(Columbia/Montrose Christian), but could not get any
closer as Gallaudet hit all four of its free throw attempts in the
final 24 seconds for the win.
Wednesday marked the first time in 31 career games that Craig
scored in double figures as she went 6-of-12 from the field and
added four rebounds and three steals. Conley finished with 10
points, five of which came from the free throw line where she was
5-of-7.
Stevenson swere 8-of-31 from the floor in the second half
for 25.8 percent, including 2-of-8 from three-point range.
Junior forward Kristen Steiner
(Fallston/Fallston) and junior guard Meliasa
Robinson (Temple Hills/Potomac) each added eight points
while Steiner added a team-high nine rebounds.
Easter Faafiti led Gallaudet with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
Nukeitra Hayes and Ann Whited each added 10 points.
Stevenson wraps up its seven-game road trip to open the
season on Saturday when it faces St. Mary's (Md.) at 2:00 p.m.
