STEVENSON, Md. - Stevenson University women's
basketball senior guard Tara Galvin (Lititz, Pa./Manheim
Township) scored a career-high 22 points and made a
career-high six three-pointers, but No. 14 York (Pa.) managed to
hold off an inspired Mustang team en route to a 67-54 victory
Saturday evening at Carolyn Manuszek Student Union Gymnasium.
The victory was the 18th-straight for the Spartans (18-1, 11-0
CAC) who have not lost since a season-opening 82-76 loss to then
No. 13-ranked Messiah on November 15.
Keli Ward, a strong candidate for CAC Player of the Year
honors, led York (Pa.) with 20 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and
three steals. On the season, Ward leads the CAC in scoring and
assists while ranking third in rebounds.
Freshman guard Qiana Coleman (Ellicott City/Mount
Hebron) also had a career-night in the Mustangs near
upset bid as she totaled her first double digit performance with 13
points.
The Spartans scored 20 of their 36 first half points in the
paint and held a 36-27 halftime lead.
With Stevenson trailing by seven with 9:34 remaining in the
second half, Galvin hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut the York
(Pa.) to just one, 47-46 with 8:37 to play.
However, the Spartans answered with a 12-1 run, keyed by
eight points from Amanda Andrews, to push their lead back to
12 with 6:04 remaining, effectively sealing their 11th consecutive
conference victory.
York (Pa.) held a 32-14 edge in points in the paint for the game
while scoring 27 points off of 22 Mustang turnovers. The Spartans
also outscored Stevenson 13-0 in fast break points.
Sophomore forward Kristen Steiner (Forest
Hill/Fallston) totaled four points, a season-high 13
rebounds and three steals.
Ward was one of four Spartans who scored in double figures and
one of two who registered a double double as April Sparkman totaled
10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Stevenson has just one day off before traveling to Wesley on
Monday for a 6:00 p.m., tipoff with the Wolverines. Wesley handed
the Mustangs a 56-48 defeat at Student Union Gynasium on January 8.
