STEVENSON, Md. - A total of 12 players scored
at least one point for the Stevenson University women's basketball
team on Wednesday night as the Mustangs used one of its best
performances of the season in handing Hood a 59-29 loss in a
CAC contest at Student Union Gymnasium.
The win was the third in the last five games for Stevenson
(4-12, 2-5 CAC) and second-straight at home.
In their last two home games, the Mustangs have outscored their
opponents 109-56 in wins over Penn State-Berks and Hood. Over that
span, the team has not allowed more than 19 points in a half,
holding Berks to just eight in the second half and allowing the
Blazers only 13 in the first half.
Senior guard Tara Galvin (Lititz, Pa./Manheim
Township) continued her recent hot streak, totaling a
game-high 17 points with five three-pointers. She has scored in
double figures in each of the team's last six games, totaling 88
points for an average of 14.7 per game.
Galvin has also totaled 18 of her 29 three-pointers during that
time.
Stevenson led by as many as 32 points and after the Blazers
(3-13, 1-6 CAC) tied the game at 12-12 with 7:29 remaining in the
first half, the Mustangs closed the half with a 14-1 run to
double up the visitors by taking a 26-13 halftime lead.
Sophomore forward Kristen Steiner (Forest
Hill/Fallston) finished the game with a team-high 10
rebounds for her fourth double-digit performance this season and
second in the last three games while freshman forward
Katelyne Briggs (Wilmington, Del./Padua Academy)
added a career-high eight in just 11 minutes.
Freshman guard Breonna Brewer
(Baltimore/Polytechnic) added eight points and a
career-high seven rebounds and sophomore forward Cecelia
Laskauskas (Arbutus/Danbury (Conn.)) totaled five points,
three rebounds and one assists in only nine minutes.
Despite the team's success against Hood, the Mustangs suffered a
disappointing loss when freshman guard Joy Bettis
(Laurel/Montrose Christian) was lost for the year with a
torn ACL just three minutes into the game. She had started the
team's last four games, averaging 21 minutes and just over
eight points per game.
Stevenson hosts 18th-ranked Mary Washington on Saturday
beginning at 2:00 p.m. The Eagles were upset on the road by Wesley
Wednesday, 52-48.
