OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Stevenson University field
hockey senior Krissy Leventis (Baltimore/Lutheran)
scored a career-high three goals, including the game-winner less
than six minutes into the first overtime as the Mustangs picked up
their first CAC victory, 3-2 over York (Pa.) Thursday at the Caves
Complex.
It was the second overtime victory in as many games this season
for Stevenson (5-5, 1-1 CAC) who handed Randolph-Macon a 3-2
overtime loss at home back on September 7.
For Leventis, she now has a team-high six goals this season,
doubling her previous total of three entering the game. She opened
the scoring just over five minutes in when she scored off an assist
from freshman Brittany Martin (Hampstead/Hereford)
at 5:03.
York (5-5, 1-1 CAC), who handed the Mustangs a 5-1 loss a year
ago, would tie the game with 16:12 left in the half when Casey
Knauss scored off a pass from Casey Lawrence.
However, Leventis picked up her second tally, assisted by
Jennifer Sauers, with under seven minutes remaining to give
the Mustangs a 2-1 lead which they would hold into halftime.
Stevenson held a one-goal lead despite having just three shots
and being on the short end of a 6-2 margin in penalty corners
thanks to sophomore Kara Zimmerman
(Odenton/Arundel) who stopped two first half shots.
The Spartans opened the scoring in the second half when April
McFarland scored her ninth goal of the year off an assist from
Knauss to tie the game for the second time, 2-2.
Neither team would score for the remaining 25 minutes of
regulation, but York certainly had some quality opportunities,
out-shooting the Mustangs 8-1 in the half.
Again, Zimmerman was up to the challenge, making three saves in
the half while sophomore Christie Greer (Bel Air/Bel
Air) picked up a defensive save, her third of the season,
with just over 11 minutes left on a shot by Knauss.
After holding a 13-4 edge in shots through regulation, York
would get the first opportunity in the 7-on-7 overtime, but
Zimmerman was there to turn away a shot by Megan Spangler to keep
the game tied.
Leventis would then score the game-winner less than five minutes
later when she dove in front of the net to redirect a pass from
senior Cat Connelly (Fallston/Fallston) that came
in from the right sideline and went through traffic and into the
circle.
The assist was the sixth of the season for Connelly, a team and
CAC-best, tying her with the Spartans' Allison Roush.
Zimmerman finished with six saves in the
game. Her counterpart, Claire Rekitzke, faced five shots
and allowed three goals as the other two shots she saw, both from
Stevenson junior Sarah Bauer (Baltimore/Perry
Hall) off penalty corners, were wide.
The Mustangs travel to Mary Washington on Saturday in a battle
for third place in the CAC as both teams are tied with 1-1
conference records. Game time is at 1:00 p.m.
