Stevenson, MD-On Wednesday, Feb. 20, Villa Julie's
women's basketball squad returned home after three straight games
on the road as they faced the Hood College Blazers (5-18, 3-12).
The visitors sprung into action at the start of the
game, securing the first two points and finding a nine-point lead
by the middle of the half at 4-13. Looking to dig themselves out of
a hole, the Mustangs pushed hard on both ends of the floor to tie
13-13 with their opponents with 5:30 left on the clock. An assist
by Amanda Courter (Baltimore, MD/ Mercy) and a
layup from Kristen Steiner (Forest Hill, MD/
Fallston) gave the Mustangs a short lead, but the team
struggled to maintain it. Hood went on to finish the half up two at
19-17.
Going into the second period, Villa Julie's women sought to
prove their strength, landing the first points with a jumper from
Allison Humphries (Bel Air, MD/ John Carroll) to
tie 19-19. The Mustangs went on a 10-0 run, and, with a 3-pointer
from Tara Galvin (Lilitz, PA/ Manheim Township),
claimed a nine-point lead at 25-19 with 16:40 left to play. But the
Blazers managed to get back on top, as the Mustangs struggled to
score, shooting 17.9 percent for the half. Villa Julie fell 39-34
to the Blazers, bringing the team' s record to 7-17 overall and
4-11 in its conference.
Galvin led the team in scoring with eight points,
while Tonia Cristino (Lancaster, PA/ Hempfield)
and Steiner each added seven.
Steiner and Ashley Burrell (Baltimore, MD/
Institute of Notre Dame) also contributed by grabbing big
rebounds for the team, Steiner with 13 and Burrell with 12.
The Mustangs will host the University of Mary Washington on
Saturday, Feb. 23 in their last home contest of the regular season.
This will mark a special day for the Mustangs as they honor their
four seniors, Amanda Courter, Tonia Cristino, Tanisha Foster and
Morgan James.
