FROSTBURG STATE, Md. - The Stevenson University
women's volleyball team moved within one match of tying the school
record for wins in a season after the Mustangs swept both games of
a tri-match, beating Hilbert 3-0 and host Frostburg State 3-1
Saturday at Bobcat Arena.
Stevenson (20-2) knocked off Hilbert in straight sets 25-6,
25-19, 25-13 before edging Frostburg State 25-22, 25-20, 19-25,
25-23. The Mustangs tied a school record with 21 wins a year ago,
equaling the mark set by the 2005 team.
Sophomore Dani Katsampis (New Windsor/Francis Scott
Key) had 17 kills over both matches, totaling a
season-high 13 against Frostburg State, including seven in the
fourth set to seal the victory.
Freshman Alexa Carney (Towson/Towson) added
eight kills versus the Hawks (5-9) while freshman Paige
Norvell (Newark, Del./St. Elizabeth) had seven.
Junior Brittany Umetin (Havre de Grace/Mt.
Zion) totaled 23 assists to go along with a team-high five
digs.
Against the Bobcats (19-3), Umetin had a season-high 45 assists
to go along with 12 digs for her fifth double double of the season.
In three matches this week, she has totaled 98 assists and 22 digs
as Stevenson has won all three.
Junior Danielle Helwig (Ellicott City/Howard)
had a team-high 14 kills against Frostburg State while committing
just one error in 36 attempts. She also had seven digs.
Freshman Jen Glock (Westminster/Westminster)
had six kills and five total blocks with Norvell and senior
Alana Eller (Ellicott City/Centennial) each adding
a team-high 15 digs. Norvell also had eight kills, four assists and
three block assists.
The Mustangs travel to Salisbury on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m.,
showdown with Sea Gulls in a CAC contest. Salisbury is currently
tied for first place in the CAC with St. Mary's (Md.) as both
teams have perfect 4-0 conference records.
