Stevenson, MD-Challenging their sixth Capital Athletic
Conference contender at home, the Villa Julie Mustangs (4-10, 1-4)
were unable to overpower the Sea Gulls of Salisbury University
(6-9, 3-3), and were defeated despite valiant attempts for a
comeback.
After the Mustangs gained possession, point guard Morgan
James (Bel Air, MD/ Mercy) got the team's momentum going
with a quick layup in the first play of the game. The scores
remained close until a short 6-0 run put the Sea Gulls ahead at
12-6. The Mustangs came within five points of the Salisbury women
with a layup from Tanisha Foster (Baltimore, MD/ St.
Frances Academy) with 4:38 remaining, but ended the half
with a 12-point deficit at 29-17.
Looking to turn the game around, the women picked up their pace
in the second period, but fell 20 points behind the Sea Gulls with
11 min. left on the clock. Still persistent in attacking the basket
and playing hard defense, however, the Mustangs cut Salisbury's
lead by nearly half with a jumper from Foster,
assisted by Ashley Burrell (Baltimore, MD/ Institute of
Notre Dame). The teams continued to push themselves until
the final seconds, but the Sea Gulls took home the 55-39 win.
Villa Julie's women were lead by senior forward
Foster, who played a key role in the team's fight
for victory with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Kristen Steiner
(Forest Hill, MD/ Fallston), who was just shy of a
double-double with nine points and nine rebounds, also added
impressive numbers to the team's stats.
Villa Julie will travel to Hood College this Saturday, January 19,
to play at 6 pm in a CAC tilt.
