Arlington, VA - The Mustangs earned a hard-fought win in their
conference opener against Marymount University. The Mustangs
in their first Capital Athletic Conference game travelled to
Marymount University and came away with a 5-2 victory.
In a very evenly contested first half, the Saints
broke the deadlock with a goal in the last minute of the
half. The breakthrough was only one of three shots Marymount
had in the first half. Villa Julie battled hard and came close when
one of their 4 shots hit the post.
A strong second-half performance propelled Villa Julie to the
victory. The game was tied up when a foul on Rose
Phelen inside the penalty box led to freshman
Allison Humphries scoring her first goal as a
Mustang from the spot. Shortly after, Villa Julie regained the lead
when a corner from Rose Phelen was headed into the
net by freshman Brittany Bangert for her first
goal as a Mustang. Only a minute later, senior Tonia
Cristino put the game out of reach when she finished a
breakaway with a chip over the goalkeeper. Allison
Humphries grabbed her second goal of the night, following
up on a rebound off the goalkeeper and senior Katie
Orlando sealed the win with a volleyed goal inside the
box. The Saints scored their second with only a couple of minutes
left in the game.
The Mustangs have a quick turnaround when they return to
CAC action on Saturday 22nd September at Owings Mills when
they face Salisbury at 12pm.
